True Blue L.A.: 2009 NL Gold Glove Award Winners

These aren’t anywhere else yet that I know of.

My friend is associated with the MLB and said he got this passed down to him this morning.

I am glad Zimmerman won. He is fantastic with the glove.

If this is true, I concur.

Utley, Cameron, and Nyjer Morgan seem like the glaring omissions.

Re Morgan, he not only switched teams, but outfield positions. I doubt there have been many Gold Gloves issued to players in those categories. From what I saw of Morgan in center, if he's back at prime condition and stays healthy in 2010, he may well be a Gold Glove contender.

I had a dream last night that, not only did Zack Greinke not win the Cy Young Award, some dude named Miguel Gonzalez who pitched for the Tigers won it, and the Gold Glove, and the MVP. It was a weird dream.

Jimmy Rollins is not a great fielder. Other than that, this list looks to be very reasonable.

It's bad form for me to criticize Pujols, but his defense early in the season left something to be desired. Gonzalez is pretty good anyway.

If you had told me a Cardinals pitcher would win the Gold Glove, I would've said it had to be Pineiro. Wainwright's name is coming out of nowhere.

Gwynn didn't get playing time until he was traded to the Padres, Beltran's been out for half of the season. Rasmus was constantly benched for Rick Ankiel, and Chris Young Jr. was sent to Triple-A for at least a month.

Victorino, Kemp, and Bourn at least played for the whole season. You can't take partial seasons for guys like Beltran, or Gwynn, and claim they should win a season award like the Gold Glove.

One of my projects is to compile edited out. One of edited out the gold glove voting for both NL and AL. Kemp had 72 votes, Victorino had 70, and Bourn had 31. 4th-6th place were Francoeur, Cameron, and Morgan respectively.

Tripon: I agree with you on the partial season issue, I was just posting their opinions. Morgan was traded, as was mentioned previously, and also missed the last six weeks of the season.

I thought Brendan Ryan rated very highly at SS---second in the majors behind Wilson, at least in one system.

I think that overstates the case. He may not be GREAT, nor may he be one of the top three in the NL, but I think he qualifies as "good"....

Earl Battey of the original Senators appears to be the only one. Eddie Brinkman won one after he left the second Senators team and was playing for Detroit. Jim Kaat, of course, won a string of 'em after the original Senators became the Twins.

Sample size, perhaps. I assume you are talking about UZR/150, for instance, which is a rate stat, in the sense that it is adjusted to 150 games.

And when the 1960 Gold Glove winners were announced, Battey was likely an ex-Washington player, since the original AL Senators announced their move to the Twin Cities (with a new Senators team to take its place) on Oct. 28. So this is the first time Washington fans can really celebrate having a Gold Glove winner.

... and of course, being the backwater, incompetently run franchise they are, instead of celebrating their star player and promoting the hell out of it, they stomp all over it with the news about the return of Interim Jim Riggleman.

Yawn.

I'm more annoyed at them bigfooting themselves than them bringing Riggles back... though both are signs of their dysfunction.
