TSN: Jones: Reflecting on more than 15 years in the majors

Todd Jones looks back...(wipes tear away with 60-grit sheet of sandpaper)

Then steroids hit, and I just need to say that if Jose Canseco had hit 38 more home runs—giving him 500 and maybe a ticket to the Hall of Fame—none of this would have happened the way it did. Canseco would have been content. There would have been no subcommittee meetings or Mitchell Report, and guys out of the game wouldn’t have been dragged through the mud.

Baseball is more uniform now. Umpires adhere to one governing body of accountability. Used to be, they could be fat, pompous pigs—routinely out of position—and eject you with no warning and hold a grudge. Now, they’re polite and treat you with respect, and we have a much better rapport with them.

We were all shook up by 9/11. I feel we—and the NFL—helped the country begin healing. I’ll never forget the first night back. They played Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American, “ and we all cried.

As an older player, you never know when your time is going to be up, so the grass is greener and the park is louder. You thank God for your good health and good luck. You’ve stuck around long enough to figure out that your career is not about you; it’s about your teammates and how you leave the game. If somehow you made it better for somebody, you’ve done your job.

We all cried, but for different reasons.

While I certainly don't agree with Jones' interpretation of the Steroids crisis (i.e., that it hinges on Canseco's ratting players out), I loved his Big Mac anecdote.

This is something (the sheer thrill and joy of the Sosa / Big Mac HR chase) that has been lost with all the finger pointing.

Now I'm the first one that will admit that I have measured Bonds with a different stick than Sosa / Big Mac, but I will always look fondly at that great '98, regardless of how many articles are published by holier-than-thou journalists....

Unless, of course, they are gay - then it is the job of all God-fearing ballplayers to make it uncomfortable and demeaning.

Way to go, Todd!

I think its funny he mentions the Sosa/Mac HR chase, THEN says steroids hit. As if steroids were introduced to baseball AFTER Mac and Sosa broke Maris' record, not years and years before.

Now we have only a commissioner. Sure, he's a wolf in sheep's clothing

I like that!

I wasn't around when the re-alignment happened. What was the "official" reason for 16-14 NL-AL split?

If you're asking why it's not 15-15, the leagues need an even number of teams.

Adding one team to each league would make two 15 team leagues, bad for scheduling unless interleague play was adopted as an ongoing thing instead of something MLB could market for a few series per year. Adding the two teams to the NL would give all of Florida to he NL, which, combined with Atlanta and Houston, with give all of the deep south to the NL. Adding the two teams to the AL would require that both those teams pay another starter's salary for their DH. Selig didn't want to pay a DH's salary anymore, so he moved his team to the NL, the AL got Tampa, and the NL got Arizona.

No mention of the time he outed himself as a homophobe? Good times.

Man, I really dislike Todd Jones.

The whole steroid mess was worth Mark McGwire. Barry was a better hitter, and he was huge, too, but McGwire at peak ball-crushitude size looked like a home-run-hitting cyborg. Todd Jones's anecdote illustrates that nicely.

Jones' comment about the "grass being greener and the ballpark louder" when a player is near the end of a career remains me of a June game back in 1980. The Yankees had just picked up veteran pitcher Doug Bird, and it was his first game as a Yankee. although he did not pitch in the game.

I had seats right behind the Yankee dugout, and when the game ended, and the bullpen players and coaches were walking across the field to the dugouts, I'm sure I caught Bird looking around at the departing crowd, listening to the loud speaker blaring Sinatra's "New York, New York", enjoying the warm, comfortable, June night, and quietly appreciating his good fortune to be a major league ball-player.

He subsequently pitched well for the Yankees, but they dumped him a year later to the Cubs for an over-the-hill Rick Reuschel.

Well, I see you've taken my reason for posting in this thread.

Let's all keep harping on this every time he writes or says anything! Because we all know his sole reason for living is to torture gays at his ranch, and there are no other aspects about him worth discussing!

How does Jones feel about the trains running on time?
