TSN: Lutovsky: Q&A with Billy Beane

Associate editor Matt Lutovsky is a fantasy baseball expert and, obviously…Billy Beane is not.

Beane, an avid video game player—he called it his “hidden vice” and said he gets “yelled at by his wife all the time” for playing—talked about his involvement with MLB Front Office Manager and offered his thoughts on fantasy baseball (he’s scared to play). He also addressed some of the issues fantasy owners love to argue about—which stat categories are best, how to know when it’s time to trade a player and what to look for when trying to figure out if minor leaguers will have success in the majors.

One of the features is on-line fantasy leagues. How much do you know about fantasy baseball in general?

BB: I’ll tell you one thing—I’ll never play on-line myself because I don’t really feel like being outsmarted and embarrassed. I say this with total candor and honesty. Particularly with Major League Baseball, if you look at the type of people who are running clubs now and then you go to the fantasy leagues and on-line gaming, they’re really starting to blend into two. I’ve had many people say, “Hey, why don’t you join my fantasy league baseball league with me?” And, quite frankly, I’m not really willing to expose myself to that arena because there are some really bright people out there.

Maaybe the A's would be better if they confiscated Beanes's Playstation.

Beane's answer about fantasy baseball is funny. There's probably more to it, too. I doubt any GM would publicly play fantasy baseball since it could give away his thoughts on different players. It'd be easy enough to shrug off, but why bother?

A GM playing fantasy baseball would be a conflict of interest. I don't think a GM should play fantasy baseball.

Can't you play fantasy baseball anonymously? I've never played, I always assumed that aliases were used (a la Primer).

As if their actual, you know, real baseball decisions wouldn't give that away.

That video game they're talking about sounds fun; I might get it if it's only like $30.

Beane's admission about the "smart people" out there is refreshing. So many people in the halos of MLB power have gotten there because of personal relationships over their actual qualifications but they strut around as if they were put on earth to be the best person for that job.

This finally explains the Harden trade.

Really? And who, pray tell, might those people be?

Maybe some GMs need hobbies that aren't related to baseball. After working yet another 18-hour day, I'd think the very idea of having to devote mental energy to a fantasy baseball team would be too much.

I play a free league on yahoo every year, and its basically anonymous. It uses your yahoo login, so some people have a non-anonymous login (billbeane_As) while most are anonymous (roger3241, luvsox1916).

I don't know the first one but roger3241 is Roger Clemens and luvsox1916 is Babe Ruth.

I'm in a league with 14 players, all are probably in the top 5% of baseball knowledge and savvy. Yet, there is one guy who has won it 3 of the past 4 years, 1st place is $7000. Really incredible that this guy keeps winning. Beane is right, the two have merged into gambling.

That seemed like a really friendly interview. Beane didn't seem as nice in that book he wrote - I wonder why he would do that?
