Ultimate Attic Find Reveals Baseball History

Well now…this certainly trumps my finding a copy of the 1953 Pillsbury Cookbook…even though it has Art Linkletter and Artur Godfrey on the cover!

Among the dusty relics was an old photograph of well-dressed men. Luckily, they were identified by name on the back. The photograph, still housed in its original frame measuring 22 x 27 inches, was an original large format salt print display photo taken in December 1862. The man who’s name appeared on some of the papers found in the attic matched one on the back of the photo. Walter T. Avery.

The following day the new homeowner and his wife brought the framed photograph, along with various miscellaneous paper items and correspondence relating to Walter Avery, to REA’s New Jersey offices. What they had was truly remarkable. Dated December of 1862, the photo pictured a veritable All-Star team of great early New York Knickerbockers, including Avery. All were key members of the club from 1845 to 1850 who had apparently gathered for a farewell party honoring one of their own. Avery was the last surviving original Knickerbocker at the time.

...Renowned baseball historian John Thorn has suggested that this photograph may have been taken in honor of Knickerbockers Adams’ departure from the club. Late in 1862 Adams had announced his plans to leave New York, move to Connecticut and get married. This is, in fact, exactly what he did. It is very likely that this historic assemblage of early original Knickerbockers was gathered to pay tribute to Adams, a founding club member. The photograph, a very rare artist-enhanced solar-enlarged salt print, was likely taken to create a special keepsake for Adams and the other key early team members pictured.

And what did I get in my attic when I moved in? Dead sparrows!

That's pretty awesome.

(the picture, not the sparrows)

$10,000? Maybe growing up in the speculative crush of the 80s jaded me, but how is an 1862 picture of an original Knickerbocker worth so little? You have what is quite possibly the very first baseball card, ever, taken in the early days of photography. Abner Doubleday wouldn't even make general until February 1862! And somehow that's worth a fifteenth as much as a Mantle rookie card?

No silly cartoon on the back.

That's pretty awesome.

It is amazing ... makes you wonder what else is out there. After the 80s baseball card craze with everyone scouring their grandfather's attic for Babe Ruth cards, these finds have become fewer and farther. But there's still some neat stuff out there.

Cool story. Thanks for linking it, Repoz.

Maybe they should Photoshop Jeter diving for a ball on it.

As for the photo, having the only known image of such a great baseball figure as Doc Adams is remarkable.

The SABR bio of Adams, written by John Thorn, mentions two other photos in which Adams appears:

In 1996, John R. Husman located an Adams descendant who provided a photo of D. L. Adams that enabled us to confirm his presence in two notable photographs of the Knickerbockers-the daguerreotype plate of 1849, in which Cartwright and Adams are joined by four other Knickerbockers, and the 1859 panoramic view of the Knickerbockers and Excelsiors, in which Adams stands fourth from the left...and Harry Wright stands sixth from the left.

Technically, this is not a baseball card, but a photograph, and that in itself may well play into the value.

hey guys ---i just read the comments on the knickerbocker photo----i am actually the guy who found it---and i was wondering how much this will go for at auction----any input you give is much appreciated---thanks

Hey jerms. Ask that question at this site. I guarantee somebody on this message boardwill probably be the one to win your photo so it's the best place to get an idea. My amateur guess is 25 to 40 thousand with a number closer to 40 more likely. If it were a baseball card, it would be worth a lot more. Photos don't carry the premium as cards do.

Thanks for stopping by; pretty cool to see you here.

Unfortunately, I can't make even a semi-informed guess as to price. As with all specialty items, I suspect it'll depend primarily on the pool of potential buyers. Not helpful, but the best I can do.

Have you released a reproduction of the image anywhere? There's a small copy in the linked article, but it'd be nice to see a larger version.
