Umpires, MLB sign agreement on instant replay

Baseball umpires and management signed an agreement Wednesday that will allow the sport to start using instant replay to help determine calls on the field. Major League Baseball still hasn’t determined when the use of replays will start.

Installation of equipment has been going on at ballparks, and officials have said they hoped to start using replay in August. Replays will be limited to boundary calls, such as determining whether fly balls were fair or foul, or whether they went over fences.

“I told our members that it’s just another tool that we can use to get the play right, not to look at it as a negative, but a positive,” World Umpires Association president John Hirschbeck said. “As hard as you try, as much as you hustle, sometimes with just the landscape of the ballparks nowadays, it’s hard to tell. So if we can get it right, you know what, let’s use it as a tool to get it right.”

This worries me a bit. I assumed it was home runs fair or foul, not just fly balls. This could mean bloopers down the line, which I would not want to see reviewed for all of the reasons stated in earlier threads about judgment calls as to where to place the runners.

Razza Frazza #$%#&% unions. Always getting in the way. Whoops, wrong thread.

Can you believe those teachers? Always going on strike...

Just funnin' folks. This is good news, quickly resolved. And like #2, I hope this is only for home runs. We can ##### and moan about strike zones with plenty of reason but I give umps no grief over trying to make those HR calls, they are just un-possible.

They boned this up. Shocking. The way implement was amazingly simple. 1 less ump in the field 1 ump in the press box where every non ball/strike call is reviewed prior to the next pitch being thrown.

Are you kidding me?

I think you're parsing too much, Greg. I think they didn't say "determining whether home runs were fair or foul," because a home run is never foul. Until determination of fair or foul, it's just a fly ball. I don't see how they'd add value on fair/foul on fly balls that don't clear a fence, given how infrequently these calls are incorrect; so I can't imagine that's what they'd meant.

Sure, they could've said it better. If they implement a good plan and describe it in a bad way, I'll survive.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Sandy Alderson, certainly somebody in the know, basically laid out how the instant replay system is going to work.

If a play is disputed, they are going to call New York, and somebody in New York is going to review the play. They expect it all will take about two minutes for an answer. lol.

The equipment is already set up for all the ballparks.
