Upton powers D-backs to 8th straight

Upton slammed his fifth home run of the season and collected two other hits Saturday as the Diamondbacks rolled to their eighth consecutive win, a 10-3 drubbing of the Colorado Rockies in front of 29,256 at Chase Field.

“Going into the season, I think he was the biggest question mark,” first baseman Conor Jackson said. “We didn’t know what he was going to do. He came up last year and kind of struggled a little bit, but the tools are there. It was just a matter of time. For him to be doing this at 20 years old? He’s going to have a long career.”

He’s not the only Diamondbacks hitter on a roll these days. That’s 72 runs in 11 games this season for Arizona, which is off to the best start in the majors (9-2) and a year after trudging along with one of baseball’s more dismal lineups now boasts the National League’s hottest offense.

They can’t possibly keep up this pace, can they?

“There are going to be times when things aren’t going to go our way,” second baseman Orlando Hudson said. “Right now, things are going good, so we’ll just ride the wave while it’s hot. Keep riding it.”

It’s more like a tsunami.

Justin Upton has a wonderful swing. Tremendous extension through the ball.

He'll have his rough times, but he's going to be a major talent.

I'll probably get killed for saying this, but, this sounds funny to me coming from Conor Jackson. Alright, let me have it.

It's stunning to watch really. I mean, I hoped. I saw glimpses of it last year. But it never occurred to me he could get out of the gates this hot, this early.

.

I'm a pretty big believer in CJ, but yeah, that statement coming from him of all people made me chuckle.

The wins are kind of nice, don't get me wrong, but I'm really relieved the Dbacks are working hard on their pythag this year.

Grumpy veteran Conor Jackson needs to realize that his best days are behind him and the club is trying to move forward with younger talent. But it's tough for him to let go of the limelight to which he feels his long career entitles him.

Justin is a beast. The first time I saw him play in spring training last year I was struck by that feeling, and it comes back every time I see him. He is just enormous for a kid his age. He's going to be a great, great player.

There's a chance that the Diamondbacks are the best team in baseball. Which is scary because I am afraid of what Levski will be like if that's true.

Yeah .. The Dbacks and Fish! I don't know though. Neither of them have had to face the 2008 Padres league leading .295 batting average. they will single you to death!

go padres!

Posted on a previous ZIPS thread:

Dan,

I've got to question the legitimacy of your projection system.

I developed my own projection system on which I've been working on for the past few minutes.

For comparison's sake, I have Upton posting a 1025 OPS, Drew at 1050 with a +35 defense, and Young hitting 54 out and drawing 125 walks.

I mean, what gives dude? It's not just the hitting, but I have Webb going 27-4 in 280 innings with a 180 ERA+ and RJ finally breaking Ryan's single-season K record (albeit by a small margin).

ZIPS sucks and CHONE swallows...

Like I said, somehow my projection system likes him quite a bit. Oh by the way, Upton and Young were 1-2 in the MVP voting too.

You think the winning will change levski? I don't.

I'm afraid I'm abjectly misunderstood around here. Feel like Billy Bob Thornton's character in "Sling Blade"

By the way, I really would like a second opinion on Justin Upton.

Kevin Goldstein, we all know he's got more tools than Home Depot... but does he have the mental aptitude to succeed? I mean, can he overcome all those personality problems, all those intangibles, all those chemistry issues that lead him to just coast along? Give us your expert opinion, Kevin. Hit us.

Geeze Levski, he admitted he was wrong, get off his case, he does good work.

Well, kevin, I am discounting some of Upton's success because of his PCL-inflated statistics.

I'm also very skeptical of this player's early success because of the PCL inflation.

17: Heh Heh. Kevin [Goldstein] can take it. I will get off his case, eventually.
Tough to do it quick when you hold grudges like an injured elephant

Levski, Scherzer got lucky yesterday. He faced a depleted Fresno lineup - Bowker was pummeling St. Louis pitching.

They can’t possibly keep up this pace, can they?

Given that "the pace" has them winning more than 130 games and scoring in excess of 1000 runs, I'd say that the answer is "no". But maybe I'm small-minded.

At least Orlando hUdson agrees that they won't win more than 130 games.

Plus, who knows if Conor Jackson will start a Luis Gonzalez/Jeff Kent-esque war against the youngsters. Maybe he's a secret 40-year-old like Greg Oden.

That is the rest of the NL's only hope!
