USA Today: Staying in Seattle a ‘touchy subject’ for Ichiro Suzuki

But now he is back in his proper place, allowing the next mannequin in line to go out and live among the humans for 30 days…

“Many people have this image of me. For a long time, I cared about that,” the center fielder tells USA TODAY through an interpreter, during a rare extended interview. “I often thought about what I could do to please them. I was always chasing after that Ichiro. It became a struggle. I think I was scared of what people were thinking of me.

“After 2004, I realized it was impossible to please them. I discovered I needed to do what I needed to, (and) if people like it, that’s good. I became more confident. And that Ichiro became a part of me, instead of me chasing after him.

“When people get placed upon a pedestal — when they start chasing after that person on the pedestal — they become mannequin-like. People striving for approval from others become phony. You should seek approval from yourself.”

...• Tiger Woods’ athleticism: “Tiger is a great golfer, but ... when you say athlete, I think of Carl Lewis. When you talk about (golfers or race-car drivers), I don’t want to see them run. It’s the same if you were to meet a beautiful girl and go bowling. If she’s an ugly bowler, you are going to be disappointed.”

'Once I turn 40,' he says, 'I can become a pitcher. I'm kind of serious about it. But I'll have to learn to throw a knuckleball. Right now, I could be a normal pitcher,' who can top out at 95 mph with a fastball.

Sure, why not?

And this:

On performance-enhancing drugs: 'When you take steroids, it's not as if wings grow out of your back, and you start flying all over the place and stealing home runs (from hitters). The word cheating doesn't apply for me regarding steroids.'

He'd also vote Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame, as long as his plaque noted that he gambled on baseball.

This made me laugh! Bowling! I can not make the sweet love to you, Giselle, your form on picking up that bucket was too ugly to bear.

My girlfriend is an ugly Wii bowler. I still love her anyway.

If this thread doesn't get more hits than the Falwell thread, I will weep for us all.

(My hypocrisy in posting in the Falwell thread is duy noted.)

He didn't say a "bad" bowler. He said "ugly" bowler.

So, Ichiro used steriods. He clearly is speaking from personal experience.

That ought to do it.

I like that Ichiro mentioned that steroids don't help with defense. Interesting choice.

Way to steal my wedding vows Ichiro!

He said "ugly" bowler.

Exactly. If she beats me with a lot of Brooklyns, that's ugly.

I don't mind beautiful girls who bowl ugly. As long as they're wearing a skirt.

Nothing uglier than a girl that leaves a half worcester.

If you look at games from 2001 and games from now you can clearly see that Ichiro's head has grown 1/16th of an inch. Plain as day.

His spring training diet includes "ice cream bars" and "eclairs" .... riiiiight. From the house of Baalco-Dazs?

"Bowling" is Japanese slang for a "modified Prince Hairy."
