USA Today: The shortstops: Nomar, Jeter, A-Rod were long on talent

Flaherty: Nudnik of the Northeast.

John Flaherty, former big-league catcher in his fifth season as a broadcaster for the YES Network, came up through the Boston Red Sox system ahead of Garciaparra and now sees Jeter and Rodriguez on a regular basis. He remembers well the discussions in the clubhouse similar to those among fans who debated the merits of the three stars.

“(Players would say) Alex might have the best all-around ability of the three — the fielding, the power, the tools scouts would see,” Flaherty says. “But then you’d go in a different direction: Who would you want on your team? Who would you want up in a big spot? Kind of throw the tools and talent out and the competition starts coming. You’d start thinking about Derek and Nomar.”

Each was different when it came to working them behind the plate.

“Nomar went up there, and you knew the first thing he saw he would let it fly,” Flaherty says. “He could do some damage on the first pitch of an at-bat. There was no trying to set him up. He wasn’t going to give you a strike. He was going to be very aggressive and, in Fenway, create a lot of damage.

“Derek’s the same way — very aggressive. He’s not going to hurt you as much (with power), but in a big spot you really had to be careful.

“Alex was more patient. He would try to work into a hitter’s count, so you could try to jump ahead, get strike one, then go to work.”

Nomar was a phenomenal player until he met Mia Hamm in 2001. Reminds me of Roy Hobbs and Harriett Byrd in The Natural. He was never the same. Of course, maybe she got him off the juice. Oh well, whatever...

Oh yeah? Mia Hamm was perhaps the greatest female soccer player in the world until she met Nomar. Her career ended just three years later. Tragic!

And Abraham Lincoln was the greatest politician in the United States until he met John Wilkes Booth. His career ended just hours later. Coincidence...or not?

When I hear Flaherty talk I want to bore 3-inch drills into my skull just so I not only will never hear him again, but in the afterlife I will have no memory of his painful career as a broadcaster.

That was a long sentence but I assure you that reading it is far less taxing than being subjected to FlashKay Enterprises.

Derek Jeter was teammates with Ian Kennedy. Nomar was managed by Kevin Kennedy. A-Rod played with Lincoln Logs.

Miguel Tejada once accidentally watched part of a football game that Lincoln Kennedy played in.

This is so true. Michael Kay is obviously annoying. Flaherty is the type of announcer whose crappiness is not fully grasped. Main reason is he doesn't have a very offensive voice. But he's Troy Aikman bad in that he'll drone on, put words together, and never say anything interesting. He doesn't even accidentally say something that is interesting. He's Troy Aikman-lite and Troy Aikman might be the worst announcer in the last 10 years.

With all this Kennedy/Lincoln talk...is there anyway Flash can get in the line of fire?

According to Flaherty the Yankees never make a bad move, have the best of everything...and kisses as much interlocking ass as he can lay his unhealthy lips on.

Plus he has disturbing elf ears.
