Vegas Watch: CBS Sportsline Is Lazy

CBS is Lazy?...Hell, they’ve even gone out of their way to bring back the controversial Dimetrios Synodinos ML ranking system!

What do both of these guys have in common? Race, of course. As it turns out, this is true of pretty much the entire list. Here’s my count:

Both White: 17
Both Hispanic: 2
Both Japanese: 1
Both Black: 1

That leaves four more. They have no comp for Aaron Laffey. As a comp for Fukudome, they use Damon a second time. They compare Price with Kazmir, who, not coincidentally, is on his team. And I’m not exactly sure what Andre Ethier’s background is, but they certainly didn’t contrast Carlos Gonzalez with a white guy.

This is such lazy writing. People do this all the time, and it really is just counterproductive. Kuroda is similar to Matsuzaka? What a crazy coincidence! Nevermind that in Kuroda’s final year in Japan he averaged 6.1 K/9 to Matsuzaka’s 8.5, or 0.9 BB/9 to Daisuke’s 1.4; let’s mention “Dice-K” four times in our paragraph write-up of the new Japanese guy!

This is truly the kind of analysis that helps you win your fantasy league. Thanks, Sportsline.

This is not especially new, and not limited to CBS Sportsline, either. In the early days of Japanese pitchers coming over, they'd be described as "a Japanese Nolan Ryan" (if power pitcher) or "a Japanese Greg Maddux" (if a finesse pitcher). Inevitably, these indefinite articles would get turned into definite articles, and when they didn't perform like first-ballot Hall of Famers, people would say, "the Japanese Greg Maddux my ass!"

It's sad now that every Japanese player gets compared now to other Japanese players. The Sportsline article above uses Damon (half-Asian, natch) as Fukudome's quick-comp, but the main blurb manages to mention Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, and Tsuyoshi Shinjo, all to say, "He is not like these players." No ####, Sherlock!

15. LHP Franklin Morales, COL

THINK: Poor man's Johan Santana

Morales has two traits to match Santana: his Venezuelan heritage and left-handedness.
According to the CIA World Factbook, just over 250,000 young men reach the age of 18 in Venezuela every year. That means there are 25,000 Poor man's Santanas with two traits to match Santana whom MLB's so-called "scouts" are missing EVERY YEAR.

Think about the international political implications for a moment: Hugo Chavez could tax on all of these incredibly wealthy citizens, continue his fiscal policies, and not have to resort to seizing the assets of foreign companies. Wouldn't that be great?

Speaking of Chavez, is freezing out Exxon an indication he's growing desperate?

Hopefully. He can always console himself with cocoa paste and models, the fat little f*ck.

Everything about CBS Sportsline's baseball stuff other than the way they manage fantasy leagues is for ####.

They compare Price with Kazmir, who, not coincidentally, is on his team.

that doesn't make it a bad comp.

They aren't a perfect pair but they are both lefties with good fastballs and great sliders (one could say Kazmir is more great FB, good slider maybe.. still close enough). Both have had some command and endurance* problems too. Price has a half foot (or more) on Kazmir but getting the same handedness, plus top two pitches... that makes for a reasonable comparison.

Plus, Kazmir is a good guess for Price's upside.

If anything this is a good instance of a non-race based comparison

*=I think that is why Kazmir missed 10 starts in 06 - a tired arm. I could be wrong. 06 is also the year Price REALLY wore down in conference play

My favorite was, I believe Lou Piniella earlier this off-season, who said that Fukudome's style was somewhere between Ichiro's and Matsui's. Of course, probably 95% of all major-league hitters have a style that could accurately be described as somewhere between Ichiro (slap-hitter) and Matsui (SLG-heavy batter who'll take a walk).

Here's the thread that was sparked by Piniella's observation.

I noticed a similar thing in a recent Rotoworld article previewing the quarterback class for this year's NFL draft.

Each propsect had a "comparison" NFL player. Andre Woodson's top comparable? Jason Campbell. Josh Johnson's top comparison is Steve McNair, with another comparison in the text to Tarvaris Jackson.

It is bothersome that whenever you see a black player coming up, he's always compared to other black players, even if his skill set might better compare to a white quarterback.

Likewise, for example: if there's a white quarterback prospect with a playing style similar to, say, David Garrard, he would never be compared to Garrard. He would always be compared to a white player.

Sportsline is a horrible site. It's not laziness that's the issue it's lack of knowledge. They don't know what they're talking about.

Right. As I said, they run fantasy baseball leagues very, very well. But I have yet to see a worthy bit of analysis on that site that isn't from the Rotoworld feed.

They're adequate at running fantasy leagues. Their in-game scoring is good but their draft tool sticks; not as much as someone like Fanball but way too often for the most expensive site on the Internet. And the advice is worthless.
