Vegas Watch: What Are The Mets Doing?

and while we’re at it...what the hell is Marty Noble doing?

Oh, and speaking of the writer:

“Schneider’s offensive production, while not eye-catching, is quite comparable to that of Lo Duca. Schneider has averaged 12.9 RBIs per 100 at-bats over the last three seasons. Lo Duca, playing his last two seasons with the Mets’ more productive batting order, averaged 11.4 RBIs per 100 at-bats from 2005-07. Schneider, likely to bat eighth for the Mets, hit 20 home runs in 1,187 at-bats the last three seasons, and Lo Duca hit 20 in 1,402 at-bats. Neither played his home games in a park conducive to home run hitting.”

RBIs per 100 at-bats. Now that is a stat I wish I had come up with. While we’re doing three year averages:

LoDuca VORP (05-07): 16.3, 27.2, 9.2 (average: 17.6)
Schneider VORP (05-07): 16.0, -4.9, 2.4 (average: 4.5)

Oh, but we weren’t talking about crazy stats like VORP; we were discussing run production.

No it's not
Schneider last 3 years: .253/.325/.356 (20 HR 153 RBI 101 Runs) OPS+ 81
Blow Duca: .292/.334/.397 (20 HR 160 Rbi 171 Runs) OPS+ 92

Schneider was decent in 2005, .268/.330/.409 OPS+ 97, and awful since (and awful before)
Want to go 5 years?- OPS+ 81 for Schneider
93 for Blow Duca

They're both in decline, Blow Duca will likely maintain that 10-12 OPS+ edge going forward.
Schneider is simply a BAD player, whi at his peak (defensively and offensively) was as best decent.

BlowDuca is not likely to be real good player going forward either.

Did Omar even think of looking for someone 27 or under?
I'm sure Shoppach was available for the right price- base upon the looks of Cleveland's OF after Sizemore I can't imagine they'd be insulted by an offer fronted by Milledge...

Veteran leadership. Game calling. Gold Glove. Proven. Familiar.

Man oh man, why didn't the Mets just sign Kendall to a one year deal? He's equally awful as Schneider but it would have only cost them money and it would only have been a 1 year commitment instead of 2. Crazy crazy crazy.

Shooty,

what #2 said. Kendall unfortunately, can't throw anyone out.

I'm not saying that it isn't crazy. But, the apologists are using Schneider's defense as a justification of the deal.

The Mets are making their fans miserable. I don't see why there should be an article about this - they've been doing that for almost two decades.

Brian Schneider is the best-known Gold Glove fielder never to have won a Gold Glove.

It appears that Hughes and Melky may be headed to Minnesota for Santana. If Hughes had been in the Mets organization, unnamed sources would have completely trashed him by now and he probably would have been purged. Cabrerra would have been buried on the bench in favor of proven veterans.

Remember the good old days of Yorvit Torrealba?

Crap. That means I have to open my e-mail. There's a lot of hobgoblins in that box right now. Will do, though. Tonight. After a few beers.

Melky's decent but he's not as good as Milledge. Considering how much PT Milledge has gotten it's a good chance that Melky would either be stuck in AA/AAA or gone already.

I think the Mets wanting to avoid a direct repeat of the Kazmir/Zambrano experience would have protected Hughes to some extent if he were a Mets prospect.
