Verdi: When Maddux says goodbye, he’ll do it quietly

How long before Verdi starts writing a Murray non-blog blog?

He amassed a fortune without ever making money his raison d’etre, raised the bar for contemporaries without raising his voice, and he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer who treated the uniform as a privilege, not a right. He didn’t strut, complain or ask for anything except the ball every fourth or fifth day. So a gala farewell tour is out of the question.

...Did we say greatest pitcher of his generation? There was more than mere symbolism attached to Maddux’s 355th career victory in his final September start for the Dodgers. That moved him to eighth place in history, just eight behind Warren Spahn, the most prolific modern day arm.

Also, it put Maddux one ahead of Roger Clemens, who generally held that designation until his body of work gave way to suspicions about work on his body. Maddux never had to testify before Congress, nor has his name ever been linked to terms such as HGH, syringe, perjury or diva. Clemens did it his way, not the Maddux or Mike Mussina way.

Maddux’s contracts never included provisions for special treatment, like private jets, in-season sabbaticals or staged signing celebrations in owner’s boxes. Spring training was not optional for Maddux either, only the trappings of celebrity. If he was accused of anything, it was of getting the benefit of the doubt from awed plate umpires.

What is Mad Dog's chance of a unanimous vote when he becomes eligible? Or are there still reactionary A-holes on the BBWAA who refuse to vote for first-timers?

Still a-holes.

Nah. He's a real prankster. I predict he calls a big press conference, announces his retirement while doing a strip tease down to his jock strap, sings "You're the Tops," and then takes out the front row with a niblick cleverly concealed in the dais.

I used to say that if Ripken didn't, no one would. In this context, Maddux is Cal's clone.

I don't think anybody will under the current format.

Isn't there a writer (or maybe more than one) who has said that he will not give a first-time vote to anyone who played in the "Steroids Age"?

That's one example of what I'm referring to in post #4. Those guys should have their voting privileges revoked. Same with the "If Joe DiMaggio was not a first ballot guy then..." set. There should be some peer review of and peer pressure against obvious non votes.

Maddux allowed 10 HRs to Luis Gonzalez, the most by any hitter. Bonds hit 8, Bagwell hit 7, and Santiago hit 6.

Maddux had his chance to take a stand against steroids when it was most needed-- 31 chances, in fact, based on the above list-- and he muffed it every time. NO VOTE FOR ENABLERS.
