Village Voice: Giuliani went to bat for the Yanks, and look what he scored

Count da ringzzzzz!....An extensive look at Giuliani and his Yankees.

It is only now, however, as Giuliani campaigns for president, that we are beginning to learn that this relationship went even deeper. Giuliani has been seen on the campaign trail wearing a World Series ring, a valuable prize we never knew he had. Indeed, the Yankees have told the Voice that he has four rings, one for every world championship the Yankees won while he was mayor. Voice calls to other cities whose teams won the Series in the past decade have determined that Giuliani is the only mayor with a ring, much less four. If it sounds innocent, wait for the price tag. These are certainly no Canal Street cubic zirconia knockoffs.

With Giuliani’s name inscribed in the 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 diamond-and-gold rings, memorabilia and baseball experts say they are collectively worth a minimum of $200,000. The Yankees say that Giuliani did pay for his rings—but only $16,000, and years after he had left office. Anyone paying for the rings is as unusual as a mayor getting one, since neither the Yankees nor any other recent champion have sold rings to virtually anyone. The meager payment, however, is less than half of the replacement value of the rings, and that’s a fraction of the market price, especially with the added value of Giuliani’s name.

Wow, the article was overly long, but this could be a real stinker of a story. Especially given Giuliani's reputation going after "technicalities," while in office, this was a huge one.

Summary for the lazy:
Yanks gave Giuliani rings worth a bunch of money. Giuliani lobbies extensively for them. Much later (and probably to avoid taxes), Giuliani pays some token money to the Yanks. Now that he's running for higher office and getting a divorce, it's all coming out.

You don't need what comes before "and" in that sentence. Worst thing a guy (or person) with secrets can do is get a divorce. If the spouse doesn't already know the secrets, a good divorce lawyer will find them.

Wait until the national press gets ahold of the "security" consulting he did for nuclear power companies! Rudy is in for a tough time. Not that he isn't capable of overcoming these things, but he is far, far from clean on a lot of things. He is very confident, though, and he might be able to exude a kind of teflon when it comes to his shortcomings the way other popular politicians have. Reagan, Clinton etc.

In a just world, being the personal patron of a two-bit hood like Bernard Kerik would sink any political career. But this is not a just world.

It's hard to imagine any scenario under which the provision of four very valuable rings to a politician by a private enterprise doesn't violate the anti-gift, if not anti-graft, provisions of the applicable law. How can a private enterprise possibly legally give gifts worth 200K to the mayor of the city in which they primarily operate?

Although the Yankees replaced Joe DiMaggio’s lost rings in 1999

I was under the impression that Joltin' Joe gave his original rings away to people in lieu of payment; I think it's described in Cramer's bio.

It may not distinction that makes the issue go away, but the article didn't say the rings were worth $200,000. They were worth that much with Giuliani's name engraved on them. Much like they'd be worth more with Derek Jeter's name engraved compared to Clay Bellinger's. I don't know if the Yanks went beyond the norm, but I think World Series rings were said to cost about $10-15K in those days.

Anybody got a formula for VORR (Value Over Replacement Ring)? ;-)

A hypocritical politician? A Mayor who accepts lavish gifts from a company doing business with his City? SHOCKING.

Presidential candidate fighting subpoenas and a criminal charge in the middle of a campaign? Yes, it is shocking. We're not that desensitized and cynical yet.

I wonder, does Guiliani have to declare the blow jobs he got from Mariah Carey and Jessica Alba courtesy of Derek Jeter?

If Jeter is tossing these around, I just want him to know that despite my loathing of the Yankees, I argued he deserved the MVP last year. I'm just saying...

It's always good to remember that Rudy Guiliani and Frank Torre received championship rings in 1996, while Bob Wickman and Gerald Williams did not.

It was always so frickin' annoying when he would get into the broadcast booth as if anyone wanted to listen him while trying to enjoy the game. What an arrogant SOB. And to have to listen to Kay and Sterling kiss his ass the entire time...brutal.

Back when I lived in SF we always wondered if Willie Brown's close personal relationship with the Starbucks CEO during the dot com boom had anything to do with there being a Starbucks on literally every block of downtown (some blocks doubled their pleasure and got two!) ... NAH

Now, many will say there's a Starbucks on every corner in every major city ... but in the Bay around 1999 or so, we actually had a Starbucks on every corner. Along with a Walgreens, another Slick Willie favorite.

I see no way Giuliani wins the primary. He already took a hit after defending abortion rights in the debate, and it just surfaced that he donated money to Planned Parenthood. Plus, given his relationship with Bernie Kerik, i'm sure there's all kinds of dirt on him that hasn't yet come out

I feel that way about Kay and Sterling.

Guiliani thinks it would be "ok" if the Red Sox win the division, and "ok" if the Yankees win it.
