Volquez shines for Reds in win No. 15

The story: Volquez wins #15, continues to make Hamilton trade look reasonable.

But Edinson Volquez and Kyle Lohse are apparently not fond of each other.

Things got a bit testy later in the fifth. After Volquez brushed back Lohse in the top of the inning, Lohse returned the favor, sending Volquez to his knees with a pitch in the bottom of the frame.

Both benches were warned by home-plate umpire Greg Gibson.

So, has a pitcher ever charged the mound to go after another pitcher?

Volquez's brushback was an inside fastball that got up and in farther than intended. It happens. Lohse was trying to murder him. He's a punk. Luckily the home plate ump let Volquez get his retribution on Felipe Lopez without tossing him even after warnings had been given. There is some justice in this world.

Yeah, I forgot about the Farnsworth thing. My biggest Farnsworth fight memory is what he did with Jeremy Affeldt in 2005

I'm not sure Wilson can even be credited with charging the mound. He just started talking smart and got his butt kicked for the trouble.

Good times.

I'm glad the Mets didn't get Lohse, what a dimwit.

He may be a dimwit, but he'd be the 2nd best starter on the team.

I'm glad too. The Mets would probably have a 4-game lead if he'd been in their rotation all year.

Only if you ignore that the Reds seemingly intentionally thru at Glaus earlier in the series.

Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson had a beanball war that I remember as a kid when they were throwing at each other and everyone else. The benches cleared, IIRC. But I can't remember if it was a pitcher who led the charge. I do remember that it was great to watch. I love beanball wars.

Eh, we'll be fine. :-)

What the hell possessed Tom Seaver to get into a beanball war with Bob Gibson?

Because, according to Goose Gossage, every third guy had to be drilled, just so you could maintain respect. But that was back when players cared about the game... and loved hurting each other, I guess.
