Wakefield (shoulder) to DL; Youkilis (shoulder) a late scratch

Greek God of...WAKES!

Tim Wakefield is going on the disabled list with a stiff, tight right shoulder. His next start was scheduled for the homestand opener on Tuesday. A replacement has yet to be named.

And, there was just a late scratch: First baseman Kevin Youkilis (left shoulder soreness) is out of the lineup. He was scheduled to bat cleanup but now J.D. Drew will bat there, with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury moving up from the No. 7 spot to No. 1. Sean Casey will replace Youkilis on the field and bat seventh.

Wakefield is returning to Boston today to receive a cortisone shot and to be examined by Dr. Tom Gill. The team is optimistic that the injury, in the same area in the back of the shoulder that bothered Wakefield late last season, will respond to the rest and he will be available in September.

...Michael Bowden, scheduled to start tomorrow for Pawtucket (AAA), is one possibility to take Wakefield’s spot in the rotation. Knuckleballer Charlie Zink pitched seven innings for Pawtucket on Friday night, so he is unavailable.

Please, for the sake of just about everyone west of I-95, go Twins and White Sox. A Yanks/Red Sox-free post-season would be oh so enjoyable.

Your tears taste salty, yet unusually refreshing...

How do you injure your arm while throwing a knuckleball?

masturbation?

No, that's a wrist injury.

Violent masturbation?

I love when bad things happen to Youkilis.

I think a plasma TV fell off the wall and onto him, putting Youks on the DL.

there isn't much danger that people are going to understand where that came from.

You turn 42, that's how.

Tough break for Zink. I really wanna see him in the big leagues, if only for a spot start. The world needs more knuckleballers.

You tell me that a Knuckleballer can't pitch on 4 day's rest?

Wilbur Wood thought three was plenty.

I don't know. He's bringing that heater all the way up into the mid-70s, that's gotta be tough on him.

Yeah, it's not really a fastball if it's thrown at 75mph, it's a pitch

In 1972 the guy pitched 25 times on two day's rest!

That is three days rest. Also, Wakefield has mentioned before that pitching the knuckleball is still strenuous and tiring for his arm.

That's Wake, Zink actually gets up to 86-87 mph.

Too bad Boston doesn't have stud starters like Dan Gies waiting in the wings.

Poor Zink. You'd think that, since they have indicated that he's only going to get a shot as a replacement to Wakefield, they'd have him matched up with Wake's pitching days. He's earned his shot.

"Too bad Boston doesn't have stud starters like Dan Gies waiting in the wings"

Um, didn't Giese only give up one run to the Angels, the best team in baseball? Giese may or may not be a scrub, but he's pitched very well so far.

Everytime a Knuckleballer goes on the DL, the world becomes a less happier place.

rconn, if you read again, you will notice that Darren was anointing Giese a "stud."

But we all know the next great "True Yankee" is the "X" Man Nady, who has been the best player in the American League his entire AL career.
