WaPo: GM Bowden Is Actively Trying To Trade Felipe López (RR)

Dynamic stabilization technology at its finest...It’s my way or the Segway!

Washington Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden sent a clear message Sunday to those players who don’t win starting jobs when the club leaves Florida later this week.

“We certainly are going to have compassion for players on this team that are everyday players that are not going to get to play every day [from] the get-go,” Bowden said. “I have compassion for that.

“If we could make a move to give them an opportunity to play every day and make our organization better, we’ll do it. But we’re not going to make a deal that we don’t think is going to make our organization better, because we’re all about winning. We’re all about the team. We’re not about individuals.”

Infielder Felipe López and first baseman Dmitri Young likely will lose out in position battles to Ronnie Belliard and Nick Johnson, respectively. López said last week he would not be happy as a substitute; Young has largely declined to discuss his competition with Johnson, which has been good-natured.

Looking over depth charts, which teams have injuries, or otherwise seem to possibly be in the market for a 2b:

Pirates: Seem like the most likely candidate, as who knows how severe the shoulder problem is for Sanchez. Louis Rivas is not a suitable backup plan for everyday work. But Lopez 4.9 million might be too expensive for them.

Cubs: Aren't they always looking for a second baseman?

Dodgers: With Kent ailing, and Rosenthal saying Loretta is a potential trade target for LA, could Lopez be a target for the Dodgers as well? Obviously Lopez wouldn't have a starting job there when Kent is ready to play though.

Rockies: Seem content to go with Nix. But maybe a team Bowden should be talking to.

Astros: Matsui out a few weeks, but they have Blum and Loretta.

Giants: Durham is hurt again, (shocker), but they have Frandsen to play 2b, so I don't think they need Lopez.

My guess is he has already contacted all of these teams, and there isn't much interest.

On another note: Isn't Lopez really just a utility player in disguise as an everyday player, whose greatest use is just to us fantasy baseball participants? Which of the above teams would be stupid enough view Lopez as an everyday starter in the first place?

What about the Yankees? I'm looking at their bench, and its a bunch of young guys. No one with the veteran presence and moxie of a Felipe Lopez. And the great thing is, Jeter is so resilient, Lopez wouldn't actually have to play.

Felipe Lopez has turned my NL only keeper team into the laughing stock of the league. I traded for him this winter, thinking he's a prime bounce back candidate (new ballpark to boot), and he loses his starting job to Christian "I'm Jose Reyes's ceiling" Guzman and Rafael "Overrated Fatball at Keystone" Belliard. I hope Bowden dumps him onto the O's today

Sounds like you kinda did that yourself drafting Lopez and thinking he'd bounce back.

Anytime I see this guys name, I still think that he's the guard from St. John's.

Yes, except he can't really play SS well enough to be a back up SS :-)

Felipe Lopez 2005 = Brandon Phillips 2007 ????

Seriously, Felipe has a career OPS+ of 89 and also has a poor glove.
He's a better player than Juan Pierre... but so what?

Frandsen is down too, but the Giants look to be going with Eugenio Velez at 2b.

EDIT: Also, Lopez is too young and walks too much to play for the Giants.

I didn't draft Lopez, I got him as a throw-in guy when I acquired Justin Upton in a trade. Figured Lopez might be good for 25-30 steals this year...

Wait, where are the Griffin articles castigating JP for "giving up" on FL? And the rash of posters who seems to relish in his (not insignificant) failings?

I love me some JP.

Wait ... Nick Johnson is healthy? The Nats signed Young to a contract extension even though Johnson is healthy?

If I were an AL team with a waffly DH slot, I'd give the Meathook a serious look.

Felipe Lopez 2005 = Brandon Phillips 2007

Thats been my thinking. I have been astounded to see how high Phillips is ranked by the fantasy sites.

If you think Felipe Lopez is enough to make your fantasy team the laughingstock, your team has much bigger issues.

Giants could use Lopez. They have significant question marks at SS, 3B or 2B for one reason or another.

EDIT: OTOH they have picked up Castillo which might end their interest in him. The Giants are really doing their best to bury Frandsen. Again.

I'd love if the Royals did, but why would the Nats deal him when his value is the lowest? I would suspect they'll let him establish his health a bit, then deal him to a contender this summer (I believe he's a FA this fall).

I think the Nats will look to trade D Young, not Johnson.

Seattle should make a bid for Young, maybe Baek? Anythings better than Vidro.

I drafted him late thinking the same thing... figured it couldn't hurt. there are some guys I've had my eyes on still floating around out there, so if this situation isn't resolved I'll dump him and pick up somebody I like.

No, he's never healthy, he is currently functional however....

Maybe. In 2005, Lopez' tOPS+, ie h/r splits relative to his OPS, park adjusted, at home was 115, on the road 85. In 2007, Phillips tOPS+ at home was 98, on the road 102.

Lopez' OPS+ at home was 130, on the road 114. Phillips OPS+ at home was 108, on the road 114.

Lopez OPS at home was 874, on the road 804. Phillips OPS at home was 811, on the road 821

Lopez pretty clearly benefited from playing in Cincinnati in 2005. Phillips appeared to not have benefited from his homepark much.

Felipe Lopez 2005 = Brandon Phillips 2007

I'm not aware of any personal issues haunting Phillips that could cause him to crater a la Lopez.

Phillips is also a much better defender. And as said above he's not a creation of GABP.

Phillips in 2007, like Lopez in 2005, basically had a season that was out of line with his previous body of work.
Lopez by OPS+
87, 74, 65, 86, 118, 91, 75
He "cratered" in 2007 due to personal issues? I don't think he "cratered" at all, a bad year yes, but not one out of line with his established level of ability- it was his good year in 2005 that is the outlier.

Brandon Phillips has hit .274/.332/.418 in 2999 minor league PAs and .262/.306/.419 in 1751 MLB PAs.

Last year he slugged .485 with 30 homers
but: his extra base hit rate didn't really climb- it look like a lot of 2Bs turned into homers (he was also either 1st or second on someone's list of "cheap" homers)
his K/BB rate actually got worse last year
for a guy who his fast he GDPs at a very high rate

he is a better defender than Lopez, and he outhit Lopez in 2007, but I don't see him as actually being a better hitter than Lopez, I think we are going to see him post OPS+s in the 90s, dropping into the 80s during off years.

Bowden and Dmitri should be patient for a week or two. Counting on Nick the Stick without a Plan B is foolish.

Frandsen blew out his achilles tendon today, could be done for the year, so the Giants may take a look at him.

The D-backs only have four backups for 2b. I expect to see Lopez in Chase on Saturday.
