WaPo: Nats Ownership Encouraging Investigation Of Bowden

But behind the scenes, according to sources, some within the team’s ownership group—which includes Managing Principal Owner Theodore N. Lerner, seven principal owners and nine founding partners—are eager to cut ties with the general manager they inherited almost three years ago, and see the investigation as a way of facilitating Bowden’s exit. The Nationals, one source said, are encouraging the investigation to return an answer on Bowden so the parties can “go on their merry way.”

In the past week, the federal probe examining scouting practices in Latin America - including the skimming of signing bonuses earmarked for prospects - has intensified scrutiny of Bowden and tested the team’s willingness to tolerate it. On Monday, Bowden denied any wrongful practices, saying simply, “I’m innocent of any wrongdoing, and besides that I don’t have any comment.”

Team president Stan Kasten, asked directly about support for Bowden, said: “Listen, I support everyone who works for the Washington Nationals all the time, period. But we’re not going to talk about things that are going on away from here that I have no control or involvement in. I’ve told you, I am gonna allow the process to play out. We’ll allow the chips to fall where they may, and we’re going to look at things honestly and deal with them as is appropriate.”

Neither Ted Lerner nor his son, Mark, were willing to comment on Monday, saying through a spokeswoman that “Stan’s response will stand as the Nationals’ statement.”

Looks like the other shoe is finally dropping.

I thought it was a size 9, but it turned out to be a 13 Wide.

What? They just can't FIRE him? Is it because of the amazing job he's been doing?

They can just fire him, but they'll have to pay the remainder of his contract, which they don't want to do. They're hoping to turn up something which will allow them to fire him without having to pay a cent.

The cynic in me came up with a similar theory this morning for why they haven't done anything.

I figured that that couldnt possible be it.

But with this crew, you never know.

Is it too late to bring on Fred Malek? I'll beginning to think that I'd take a Nixon-loving dog-bbqer over these guys.

I don't know, being able to fire Bowden for cause seems like a sensible thing to do.

I didn't do a damn thing so get out of my face. Oh yeah, and no comment too!

Wishing for our GM to be caught up in a scandal and exposed as a dishonest liar so we can fire him without paying his contract...yeah, that's an organization going places!

While this is the only thing I can think of that "makes sense", it still doesn't make sense. You suspend him pending the investigation. Even if you still have to pay him, he no longer has any control and you're not going to have to pay him any longer or any more money than you will without suspending him.

Going to be a problem if they ever ask him about road games.

Sometimes when you have a revolution, you've got to cut away some of the dead wood that helped you get there before you can move forward.

I think Kasten and the Lerners might go far by instituting the first Stalinist baseball FO...

Nice hire, MLB! Could they have chosen a worse gm for the Nats?

Maybe they are actually trying to be fair to Jim and don't want to punish him until the investigation has reached conclusions.

This is possible. Kasten's remarks seem very calculating, though.

While nobody knows what Kasten's really thinking, it's assumed that he's been on the anti-Bodes camp for a lot longer than this past week.

If Stan has wanted him gone, but Bodes' relationship with Mark Lerner keeps him in place, then Kasten's non-enthusiastic responses make sense.

Did that chimp ever sign an imaginary person to a $1.4M deal?
