Wha?...wha?...That Lo Duca was planning on heisting the Bay Meadows Racetrack and using junked-up Lollyplopteens.com gals as extras?
In some of the first comments by a high-ranking major league team official on the findings of the Mitchell report, Washington Nationals President Stan Kasten said the team had no advance notice that catcher Paul Lo Duca, who signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Nationals on Dec. 11, would be named in the controversial report two days later. But Kasten did not say whether the team would have gone through with the signing had it been known.
Speaking to a small group of reporters in a conference room at the Nationals’ RFK Stadium headquarters, Kasten said he was “disappointed” that Lo Duca and several former Nationals were included in the report by former Senate majority leader George J. Mitchell into performance-enhancing drug use in baseball, and said he would encourage Lo Duca to cooperate with Commissioner Bud Selig if Selig requests further information in exploring potential punishments for players named in the report.

"He has never been with a losing team, ever. He's a winner. He's always won. It's what he does....I'd invite any of you to talk to any of the people who have ever pitched to him about what kind of catcher he is. They all love him, all of his teammates love him, because of the way he plays the game of baseball. He likes facing the best pitcher and the best pitcher's stuff with an 0-2 count in the bottom of the ninth. It's what he does. I've had to watch it for years. I've watched him beat every team I've been with for years. Game on the line, he gives you that at-bat....He's a winner, and that's why he's here, because we're ready to start winning. We're opening a new ballpark and it's time to win and it's time for our young players to develop and it's time for them to know how to play the game....That's what this game is about. It's not about statistics. This isn't fantasy baseball, it's about winning baseball games."
I can almost buy this reasoning if you're looking at it from the rather-be-lucky-than-good standpoint. I would be on board had Bowden admitted up front that he acquired Lo Duca because he views him as a good luck charm. Obviously Paul Lo Duca is an obscenely lucky man.
uh, Jim, considering your most recent employers have been the Reds and the Nats, I think its safe to assume that you've seen a LOT of players beat your teams
An interesting accusation. Those were the most well-developed little kids I've ever seen.
"... and if he could ground into a double play in that situation, he would. But he'd do it like a winner."
Well, apparently he's quite versatile.
Yeah... the relationship was highly inappropriate and, since he was married, on the highest order of #############, but pedophile is really going a bit far...
Actually, the story about Sandberg here in Chicago is that his wife was the unfaithful #, not him.
Do the '99 Dodgers not count because he only played 36 games? I take it that Bowden forgot to look at his minor league career too.
A 36 year old catcher coming off an 80 OPS+ season in which he played only 111 games? I don't think anyone will miss him, even if he was the nicest guy in the world.
I'll grant you the latter point, but the former point is, to say the least, debatable. Catchers don't age well, as a rule, and Lo Duca saw a serious drop-off in production last year at the age of 35. It doesn't take a fortune teller to see what's in his future.
They signed Lo Duca because they can't tell the difference between a star and a slightly above average player on the ass end of his career.
WaPo: Nats Were Unaware They Need to Win, not Lose Baseball Games
Well, when he's being replaced by the 30 year old catcher with the career 82 OPS+ coming off consecutive seasons of 72 and 77 OPS+, I think there's a good chance that he'll be missed for at least a season, which is all that Ziff said.
