WaPo: O’s Appear Willing to Trade Tejada (RR)

Here we go again with the Miggy rumors…

Those who have spoken to Tejada recently about the subject said he is happy and does not want to be traded. But Orioles executives and Manager Sam Perlozzo have met several times, though not in the past month, to discuss how to deal with Tejada’s tardiness in arriving for games.

“I can’t sit here and say we haven’t talked about it,” Orioles Vice President Jim Duquette said. “It’s a topic we’ve talked about with Sam.”
...
One player, speaking off the record, said that Tejada is still popular among his teammates but that his tardiness is an issue.
...
Several team sources said they have noticed Tejada sulking some of late, perhaps stemming from his name being linked to the investigation into an affidavit from former Oriole Jason Grimsley, which appears to link several of his ex-teammates to the use of amphetamines and perhaps other substances.
...
“If this is the route they go, they shouldn’t have re-signed [Melvin] Mora to that extension,” another AL team executive said. “Not to say they shouldn’t [trade Tejada] but they better be sure they get enough talent back in return.”

I think he's afraid Grimsely said much the same thing.

It'd be great for me if the Rockies got him, and they could use him.

Whoo, I hope they're taking notes, that's good advice.

Astros were close to a deal last winter: Lidge, Everett and either Lane or Taveras for Miggy. Any idea what it takes for Purpura to get him now?

I'm not the registering type, so does anyone know Tejada's contract status? And has the whiff of B12 stink affected his value much? There have to be a couple teams out there who'd risk the PR hit (and the potential suspension if things go very wrong) for .5 or 1.5 seasons of his production. He's still seems good enough for someone close to the edge like TOR to grab him in July.

"Lidge, Everett and either Lane or Taveras for Miggy."

That sounds pretty weak to me. Do I underrate Taveras?

I'd love for the Red Sox to get him, but I assumed they'd have to start with Lester and go from there-- perhaps Lester, Pedroia and Edgar Martinez or something. I love Tejada, but I wouldn't be thrilled by a trade along those lines. I'm not sure the Sox can part with Lester if they want to hold off the Jays and Yanks, for starters.

Aren't there 2 1/2 more years on Tejada's contract? Or is it just 1 1/2?

Toronto makes a lot of sense to me. Scary thought.

Baltimore signed Tejada for six years and $65 million in December 2003. He's hitting 366/513 this year.

The White Sox might make sense, too.

Yes, "Mr. Swing at Everything" isn't too bad at all indeed.

OK 3.5 years for $35m+ for a 30+ SS might be more than most teams would/should grab for a stretch run. But the Red SOx can afford that, as could the White Sox or Giants (if Barry hangs 'em up.) Toronto seems ot be out of that derby though.
   12. Cris E Posted: June 27, 2006 at 10:50 AM (#2077555)
Just to be clear: the dollars might work but the Giants would be moronic to go that route if Barry retired. Once the meal ticket goes home they need to cut way back and finally retool, and Tejada is the wrong guy for that schenario.
   13. AlouGoodbye Posted: June 27, 2006 at 10:56 AM (#2077560)
The dollars might or might not work for the Giants, but the player doesn't. The Giants have Vizquel at short, and he's under contract for next year as well. And with his OBP currently standing at .388, I think the Giants are quite happy about that.

That would be awesome, I might attend some non-Met games then like I used too, besides you don't need steriods here, well unless your Dante Bichette.

The White Sox might make sense, too.

Scary

Brandon McCarthy and... ?
   16. ddp Posted: June 27, 2006 at 12:48 PM (#2077665)
During the offseason, the O's (foolishly) didn't count on Chris Ray being able to handle the closer's job which would explain the desire to trade for Lidge. I don't think they'd have the same level of interest in Lidge as they did before especially since their bullpen seems to be developing with guys like Britton and Birkins. Thus, a Lidge/Everett/Lane or Taveras package would be horrible for the O's and I think even Flanagan would be wise enough to realize that.

The Mets could get him and use him as a DH...oh wait.
   18. David Nieporent Posted: June 27, 2006 at 01:14 PM (#2077692)
Theoretically, trading Tejada is a good idea. He's one of the more valuable players in the game, and the Orioles need to rebuild.

The problem is

(A) If you're going to rebuild, it makes no sense to do it half-assed, and the Orioles always do. (As the article itself points out, they just decided to sign Mora to a big extension.) Half-assed rebuilding just puts you on an endless cycle of mediocrity (Going on a decade now for the Orioles...)

(B) Fans do matter. Is there much of any other reason to watch the Orioles besides Tejada? ("Let's see how many people Daniel Cabrera can walk!")

(C) The real trump card here is that the Orioles are dumb. Let's face it: is there a single Orioles fan who actually believes the lightweights in the Orioles' front office/ownership could possibly get full value for Tejada? In theory, you should able to get a lot for him, but it's really hard to do that right.

Do the Angels have any interest? I know they're looking for a big bat and they have a ton of prospects they can deal. I know they have OC, Brandon Wood and Erick Aybar already.
   20. PJ Martinez Posted: June 27, 2006 at 01:33 PM (#2077727)
Would Reyes move to second? Milledge and... ?

From a Baltimore fan perspective, I agree with Nieporent that trading Tejada isn't all that likely to work out for Baltimore. Tejada's a draw, and he's signed for a few more years. If they were to do things right, he could even still be around when Baltimore has a winning record again. They should certainly hold out for premium talent, especially since there's always the chance he'll be an attractive item next year or even the year after that.
   21. PJ Martinez Posted: June 27, 2006 at 01:34 PM (#2077729)
The Angels might work as the link in a three-way trade.
   22. PJ Martinez Posted: June 27, 2006 at 01:37 PM (#2077732)
In fact, it'll never happen, and I imagine it wouldn't be popular with the Angels fans around here, but a Manny+cash-to-Anaheim/Tejada-to-Boston/prospects-to-Baltimore deal could possibly work for all three teams.
   23. ddp Posted: June 27, 2006 at 01:48 PM (#2077744)
Supposedly (and I offer no verification other than rumors in the papers), the O's and Angels were linked in trade talks. O's fans speculated Tejada was the trade subject.

That sounds pretty weak to me. Do I underrate Taveras?

I don't think it was weak that the time that it was offered, but the position has certainly been lessened by the play of Lidge, Lane, & Taveras. Good thing for BAL that they didn't do that deal. Lidge is still pretty darn good, but that's no longer a match. My guess is that given the performances of their pitching in the minors, HOU is much more willing to part with some high potential pitching at this point. Everett would need to be part of the deal in all likelyhood as well.

So...Everett, Hirsh/Patton, and then something....not sure who.

Taveras isn't being used well IMHO. He played himself out of the starting job and has never really been put in a great position to learn and develop. This is the problem when players, especially position players, get promoted too quickly and straight from AA. They struggle for a few years before they catch up: see plenty of examples such as Jose Reyes. Eventually they turn it around. The way that HOU is using Taveras right now, I'd like to see them option him to AAA and recall Luke Scott. Give Willy a chance to develop in a low pressure AAA environment instead of on a team trying to make another run.

Manny+cash-to-Anaheim

I don't think the Angels will do this as long as their Mo Vaughn deal remains in living memory.

"I don't think the Angels will do this as long as their Mo Vaughn deal remains in living memory."

I don't think the deal will happen, but Manny and Mo are worlds apart. I assume the Anaheim FO can look past the team name emblazoned on Manny's jersey.

Would Reyes move to second? Milledge and... ?

Been there. Done that. Not going to happen again. Not for Tejada, not for Jeter, not for A-Rod.

Harrumph. Jose Reyes will be the Mets' shortstop for as long as . . . well, for at least as long as the rest of Miguel Tejada's career, let's put it that way. If anyone would move to second base upon the Mets' acquisition of Tejada, it would be Miguel Tejada.

Which is why, of course, it wouldn't happen. But there is no one playing baseball on this planet, anyway, who is going to displace Reyes from the Mets' SS job. The Mets may have been dumb once. They may even still be dumb, for all I know. But they're not dumb enough to repeat that particular mistake again.

Maybe not playing baseball, but somewhere there is a little guy playing teeball, and one day he will replace Jose Reyes at short.
