WaPost: Acta Is Still Manager—for Now (RR)

Hours before Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay, a Fox Sports report, citing major league sources, suggested that Acta will be fired by week’s end and replaced with bench coach Jim Riggleman. Team President Stan Kasten neither confirmed nor denied the report, saying: “I would never talk about personnel, because I don’t. I’ve been asked a variation of that question [about Acta’s job security]—from some media outlet—almost every day since the first week of the season. And if I had a policy to talk about personnel, I’d have to do that story every single day.

“Having said that, I can’t tell you how perplexed I am by this season and this team and the things that are going on. And our record is, you know, very troubling for me every single day. . . . So yeah, I’m troubled by everything. We continue to look for solutions. Have I thought about every possible recourse? I have. As has [acting general manager] Mike [Rizzo], as have our owners. We’re certainly not satisfied with our record; far from it. We’re distraught over it and we’re going to consider everything we need to do to make it better.”

At least for the day, Acta remained on the job, trying to restore some dignity to a ballclub that fell to 16-44 with an 8-3 loss to the Rays. Acta, speaking before the game, said: “I haven’t heard anything” about an impending firing.

Riggleman, who was hired as bench coach before the start of the season, said he had no knowledge of any plans that would install him as this franchise’s next manager. “I don’t know where that started,” Riggleman said.

I have to report that, in spite of rumours to the contrary, the Nationals' relief pitching has not improved in terms of their effect on Win Expectancy since the firing of Randy St Claire. It has,in fact, got a lot worse. I'm still working on starting pitching.

Here's a question - in terms of Win Expectancy, who has been better since 9 May: Villone or Tavárez?

You can't blame Acta for the worst put together roster in baseball.

McCatty has a big advantage with the rotation. I'm looking at the relief data another way, because raw effect on win expectancy doesn't really reflect the effect of McCatty's superiority with the rotation.

I'm not a "fire the manager whenever you lose four in a row" advocate, and I don't disagree with #2 as to the executive handling of the Nationals, which has been bad before and after Bowden. But day after day, seeing the mental mistakes, the questionable game calling by Manny, and the fact that this team actually has a better lineup than a number of NL teams (yes, the pitching is bad), it is time to go another direction here. (Whether Jim Riggleman as interim manageris preferable, I don't know. But sometimes you need to make changes at the top, not just with Randy St. Claire as scapegoat).

I've posted the result of my pitching coach analysis here. Switching to McCatty was probably the right move.

seeing the mental mistakes

If I was certain that the mental mistakes are a product of the manager not holding people accountable, I'd agree that Acta should go. But I'm not. I find myself wondering how much of that stuff is down to the players' own capacity to concentrate. Some people are, one might say, easily distracted; I have a feeling that 'dawg' Bodes really preferred that kind of player.

But I don't know. I don't speak to these people on a daily basis. Maybe a lot of the trouble is down to Nick the Sick losing a step or two in range. Or maybe it's the bullpen. Or maybe, as I believe, the rot is at the top. The slow process of finding a new GM is at the heart of the trouble. Why is it taking so long? If they want to wait until the end of the season, then do Mr Acta the same favour.

well it must be a fact, since it wasn't reported by a blogger, but by someone in the industry that has journalistic ethics.
