WEEI: Pedro: ‘I consider myself a Bostonian’

Bostonians: Half John Henry - Half Bill James.

Pedro Martinez, who is scheduled to pitch Game 6 of the World Series, spoke to the media at Yankee Stadium. Among the topics, Martinez touched on his relationship with the Red Sox fans:

Q. Would it amuse you to hear that every Red Sox fan is rooting for you to beat the Yankees?

PEDRO MARTINEZ: No, it wouldn’t. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. I know that they don’t like the Yankees to win, not even in Nintendo games. (Laughter). And knowing that I am part of Boston, I consider myself a Bostonian, as well, too, I’ve been a Montrealer, a Bostonian, and now a New Yorker, and somehow I might become a Philadelphian now. But I’ve only been there for a short period. It’s something that’s a work in progress, and I’m pretty sure that every Boston fan out there can feel proud that I’m going to try to beat the Yankees, and I’m going to give just the same effort I always did for them. They’re special fans, and they will always have my respect.

...Q. Following up on that, what do you make of the chants when they start chanting “who’s your daddy” out there at Yankee Stadium?

PEDRO MARTINEZ: That’s an old one. I’m going to pass on that one. Let’s just kind of stay in the present over here. I’m not going to answer that question. And I’m sorry for that.

Pedro has personality, something that is lacking in the modern athlete. Probably as much as his pitching, I'll miss his interviews when he retires.

Half John Henry - Half Bill James

So... Henry James. All Bostonians write tediously long novels that make promiscuity as boring as possible.

I consider myself a Lemurian.

(But not, I hasten to add, a lemur.)

Way to grease the wheels for your negosh with Theo, Petey.

My favorite Pedro comment was the time he talked about wishing to have the ability to take a pill that would allow him to avoid having to eat food anymore.

I love that he also referred to himself as a "Montrealer."

Wait, Gef, I thought you were from the Isle of Man?

agree. ...(also No mention of his stint in LA.)

Pedro's current teammate and unlikely world series participant Matt Stairs played with Montreal before Pedro, and was signed by Boston before they signed Tim Wakefield.

Yes, I double-checked. You ARE from the Isle of Man, Gef! Well, technically you were born in New Delhi, but you live on the Isle of Man.

(please tell me I'm not the only one who got what his moniker referenced)

How many times does he get to hit Rodriguez tonight?

he struck him out twice in game 2 so he'll probably try for that again

It depends if Andy Pettitte follows the David Wells formula for postseason success. In that case, only once.

Dammit, I just knew someone in this crowd would check the record ...

... but who's to say that the Isle of Man is not, y'know, the lone surviving remnant of Lemuria?

Just because James Churward didn't say it, doesn't make it so. Though I guess he was actually a Mu guy. Hell, I haven't read that book in about 40 years.

Nope, not at all. I remember reading about Gef in one of those books I got from a book club in middle school. I was big into paranormal stuff then. Of course, I also ordered "Welcome Back, Kotter" books.

Is Matt Stairs still a baseball player?

Ba-dum-bum.

It would be so nice if the Yanks just blew this ####### off the mound by the third inning tonight. That would be the cherry on top of winning the World Series.

Thanks, CP, for renewing my loathing for all things Yankee.

Why do you hate America?
   24. Cowboy Popup  Posted: November 04, 2009 at 06:54 PM (#3378016)
Why do you hate America?

I didn't realize not hating America meant you had to pretend to like a total jackass just because he was a great pitcher for the Red Sox or because he had amazing rate stats. I mean, I knew that was a primary qualification for being a primate, I just didn't think it applied to not hating America.
   25. Gonfalon Bubble  Posted: November 04, 2009 at 06:58 PM (#3378018)
If I ever had to describe Pedro Martinez in just two words, "total jackass" would be the only sensible choice. Is there even another possibility?
   26. SoSHially Unacceptable  Posted: November 04, 2009 at 07:03 PM (#3378020)

Cool. I didn't think my rate stats were even above replacement level.

CP is a Jeter fanboy and Pedro has hit him before, intentionally or not. I am not surprised he has no love for Pedro. It's the nature of fanboydom. He probably has his other reasons but that one is a contributing factor.
   28. Cowboy Popup  Posted: November 04, 2009 at 07:17 PM (#3378029)

Like there's anyone on this board that doesn't know that already.

and Pedro has hit him before, intentionally or not.

This has absolutely nothing to do with it. Unless you think I harbor furious personal grudges against Daniel Cabrera and Victor Zambrano as well.

I am not surprised he has no love for Pedro. It's the nature of fanboydom.

Isn't a little early in the offseason for this kind of personal attack? Talk about thin skinned. Considering the crap said around here about my favorite player I'm surprised it took this little to get a response like this from a Pedro fan. Sheesh.

He probably has his other reasons but that one is a contributing factor.

I'm gonna watch my team play baseball tonight. That must be bothering you. (See how obnoxious it is to make bogus assumptions about a person based on their rooting interests?)
   29. Russlan wants Pedro to be a Met again  Posted: November 04, 2009 at 07:26 PM (#3378037)
I was 99% messing with you, CP. It appears that my attempt at humor wasn't very successful. No offence, intended.

I'm gonna watch my team play baseball tonight. That must be bothering you. (See how obnoxious it is to make bogus assumptions about a person based on their rooting interests?)

It's not a bogus assumption. I'd much rather my team were playing baseball now. The only thing that annoys me is how some people (not you, actually) seem to think rooting for a successful baseball team means they've accomplished something.

BTW, why do you think Petey is a jackass?
   30. Cowboy Popup  Posted: November 04, 2009 at 07:29 PM (#3378039)

Ah, my mistake. The fanboy word gets me all riled up. Man I dislike that word. Glad you weren't serious! I hope wasn't overly nasty in my response.

The only thing that annoys me is how some people (not you, actually) seem to think rooting for a successful baseball team means they've accomplished something.

Trust me, I am well aware that I haven't accomplished anything of note. Well, other then conning my wife into the unfortunate position of being married to me.

How did you manage to get a girl to come to your mom's basement?

I am surprised that you are married. I thought you were a little young to be married.
