WEEI: The Evan Grant Interview (Audio)

YIKES! Even Count Benigno would drown in this bloodbath.

(How did things change after Pedroia had such a great August) Grant: Again, it’s based on the entire body of numbers over the course of the season. I know Pedroia won a Gold Glove at second base and Grady Sizemore is considered a Gold Glove defender in the outfield, too. Is Pedroia a better candidate in retrospect? Guys, I’ve acknowledged that time after time after time. I am telling you when I put together the list on the day after the season, ultimately the numbers I came up with all of that stuff led me to think hey wait a minute I don’t want to overvalue Pedroia’s guttiness and grittiness and if anything I may have erred on the side of statistical analysis.

(Did you take into consideration that he struck out only 52 times) Grant: No, I did not … I don’t know why I would take into account the number of strikeouts in an MVP candidate.

(Are you serious) Grant: How far down the list of strikeouts does it have to be to be considered an MVP? Where did Ryan Howard finish in the National League MVP? Where did he finish in the voting?

(I think where our disagreement is is that you don’t understand his game) Grant: What I value is getting on base and producing runs.

It's really too bad the uncouth morons that are Ordway and Co got to do this. I'd love to see some intelligent people rip dumb writers a new one.

'EEI is unlistenable. I can't listen to audio at work (well, I can, but then I get fired, that's bad) so I didn't hear the whole thing but Grant comes across pretty reasonable in the excerpt printed here.

"I don’t want to overvalue Pedroia’s guttiness and grittiness"
"I don’t know why I would take into account the number of strikeouts in an MVP candidate."
"What I value is getting on base and producing runs."

Are the kind of statements I want to hear the folks voting on these things say. Grant seems like he's been pretty upfront that in retrospect he made a mistake. I'm sure Ordway and friends were respectful of Grant and treated his admission of a mistake with dignity. I don't know why people around here are upset about this frankly since, y'know, Pedroia WON THE FREAKIN' AWARD. Being left off the ballot in a self-confessed mistake seems like a minor thing to me.

WEEI are ########. News at 11.

As I said in the other Grant thread, his is one of the most defensible explanations of an indefensible position I've seen come out of the BBWAA, ever.

Dale & Holley's pretty good, though Holley's baseball knowledge can be summarized on a popsicle stick. That's actually the worst thing about WEEI - for such a freakin' crazy baseball town there are far too many people on the station who know nothing about baseball. It should be a god damn requirement.

I've always found Evan Grant to be a solid beatwriter. I like his stuff.
