WFAN: Rose: Interleague Play Is For The Birds

A couple of days old, but…Take it off the books!

Trust me, there was absolutely no juice last night at Camden Yards, unless some players are doing something they shouldn’t be doing. There was no buzz (there, is that better?), no energy, and seemingly no reason for being there. I’m telling you, these games are downright intrusive; an unnecessary interruption to the National League season. The Mets don’t care about the Orioles, the Orioles don’t care about the Mets, they’re not competing for the same thing, and yes, I would rather have more games against the Nationals, Diamondbacks and Pirates than I would against any team in the American League except, I suppose, the Yankees.

Six games against a team’s natural rival, if it even has one, is fine. Otherwise these games seem like an irrelevant waste of time.

When the St.Louis Cardinals come to Citi Field on Monday night it’s going to feel like Opening Day all over again.

Why is a Mets fan arguing "give me the exact schedule as our division rivals except throw on 6 games against a 200 million dollar team every year"?

I'm sure he'd be saying the same thing if the Mets had swept that Orioles series.

Dank, dark hotel room? I didn't know the Mets stayed at the Inner Harbor Days Inn.

That being said, it was interesting how few Mets fans were there as opposed to the last couple of times the Mets were in Baltimore. Maybe their fans are tired of the Mets 'not having any juice' pretty much wherever they play these days?

BTW, I like interleague play, but if it means no more visits from Mets and Phillies fans, I can do without it.

It was those damn Mets fans who came to the Wednesday night game against the Orioles, took all the Adam Jones bobblehead dolls and put them on sale on E-Bay!

I've wondered about this before...the Orioles don't seem to pay any attention to who the team is playing when they schedule giveaways. The Yard is inundated with Mets, Red Sox and Yankee fans when those clubs come to town, even when the O's were good...of course, even much more so these days...so why schedule Orioles giveaways whenever any of them come to town? But it happens as often as not. Doesn't seem to be a solid marketing concept to me.

Teams have been doing that crazy kind of marketing for a long ass time. I remember looking up the Phillies schedule and all of their marketing promos were on days when they were going to get a lot of people anyway. Meanwhile on days when they would struggle to get 20k they wouldn't do a damn thing.

I mean who schedules the Yankees and a fireworks display for the same series? The Yankees are going to get you 50,000+ people and the fireworks is going to do that too.

The Brewers would for the longest time schedule the Cubs for the summer months during the weekend which made no sense. You are going to get a ton of fans at those games so why take away from dates that were already going to be popular?

I know those examples are not solely marketing problems but they are just some of the mind boggling stuff I've seen that MLB does to dig themselves into a hole.

Considering how the Mets looked in Baltimore, I wouldn't mind more games against Pittsburgh and Warshington.

And boy, how Arizona has fallen. Their young players seemed to be garnering them a pretty big media bandwagon. Guess that's what a loss of Webb will do for you.

Edit: No more Pirates, actually. I'll say uncle.

I'd agree but there is some sense to throw your best when the best is on field too. Or to make the special extra special.

Of course, there should be marketing efforts during the perceived lesser scheduled games too.

this has nothing to do with the marketing as you mentioned, but the schedules are made by people independent of the league. There is a lot of things I would do differently with the schedules if it was allowed to make sense. Last week we had a day with only two games being played, that should never happen, one of the scheduling rules should be no fewer than five games on any day. The one you mentioned is also silly, I understand why it happens and the fact that if it's on a weekend you can drive in visitors for the local games therefore maybe somewhat helping the local economy. But at the same time there needs to be thinking about how to maximize attendence, weekend games should be mostly with the lower drawing teams if you are in a city which has strong attendence, in cities with weak attendence to maximize you put your best attending games on the weekend.(I know that sounds counter intuitive but a team that is only drawing 10,000 is going to increase attendence more by scheduling a desireable weekend series and a less desireable weekday series than the other way around)

To entice Orioles fans to buy tickets, which reduces the number of fans of the visiting team.

I wonder if they give bobble heads to fans of the other team. Ah ####, I just gave Lionel Hutz Alfred Rava an idea.

Sometimes it might seem otherwise, but I have a suspicion that both teams compete to win games.

Interleague play. What a joke.

But out-of-towners tend to get to the ballpark a lot earlier, so a lot of the hometown folks get shut out at these promotions while Yankee fans take their Nick Markakis t-shirt home to use as a sham-wow substitute.

The Phillies this past week have been in the "Otherwise, Definitely Otherwise" category.

What's the interleague tally in 2009?
   16. Jolly Old St. Neck Wound, Moral Idiot Posted: June 22, 2009 at 12:58 AM (#3227300)
As of now the AL is 10 games ahead.

I can't stand this crap. As if every NL/NL game is awe-inspiring. Yeah, this game would really have less buzz than Pirates/Nats.

Honestly, what is the big deal here? It's baseball. Just baseball. I wish people would just get the #### over it.

And this is coming from a Jays fan that just watched his team get shut down by the ####### Nationals.
