What a switch: fan Miquel Batista meets his idol Kenny G

This so reminds me of the time Gates Brown met his idol Myron Floren.

The Mariners pitcher and blossoming soprano saxophone buff was invited to a concert at the Dodger Theatre in Phoenix on Tuesday, where he spent 20 minutes backstage with his musical idol, Seattle native Kenny G. They talked music, baseball and saxophone breathing techniques in a private waiting area before Batista was serenaded with his very own Kenny G session.

“He played for me,” Batista said. “It was my favorite song, ‘Alone.’ Now, I feel like I’ve had everything. I’ve talked pitching with Sandy Koufax, had Kenny G play for me. Maybe if I could have an interview with God, then I’d be served. I’d be complete.”

...Batista’s night wasn’t over after Kenny G wished him well. Partway through the sold-out concert, the musician left the stage while playing “Havana” and waded through the aisles, slowly approaching Batista’s seat.

“Then he pauses from playing,” Batista said. “And he goes, ‘Thanks, guy, it was cool today.’ ”

Remember a few years ago when it was revealed that Batista was a novelist and everyone marveled at how deep he was? Now, not so much.

David Sanborn must be burning with jealousy right now.

See, I wish Will Ferrell could be as funny as this. My new favorite quote of 2008. Freakin awesome.

Perhaps Michel Buble, Yanni, and John Tesh will drop into camp, too.

I liked the story where Kenny G (or someone on his mountainous compound) hit the kid down below with the Clif Bar.

I guess Miggy won't be pitching in (beh)Shea anytime soon.

I can't stand Kenny G's music - every time I hear it, I envision my local forecast on the 8's - but I think he's considered a talented musician. As opposed to, say, Buble or Tesh. I guess I just give G some points for being a gifted player, even if his music is crap.

Later in the show, Kenny G debuted a new song he's been working on for a while that he calls "Hot 'n' Heavy."

Hmm...I'm reminded of an old Weekend Update on SNL, when Norm MacDonald was doing it:

"Kenny G released his Christmas album this week. Happy birthday, Jesus ... hope you like crap!"

A fine summation of the bewildering range of Jewish influence on American mainstream culture, in one short list.

And a link to Richard Thompson's wonderful response. "I Agree With Pat Metheny". (Go ahead and download the mp3 without guilt - it's from RT's official web site, so he won't mind...)

I particularly enjoyed that after this conclusion:

Everything I said here is exactly the same as what I would say to Gorelick if I ever saw him in person. and if I ever DO see him anywhere, at any function - he WILL get a piece of my mind and (maybe a guitar wrapped around his head.)

I can't say that I've ever heard them. Not everyone here is an indie rocker. That said, this would be cooler if Miles Davis strolled into camp.

GGC, you really shouldn't need to be an indie rock fan to like Neutral Milk Hotel (though you may need to be one to hear them in the first place). I encourage fans of any music to give them a listen.

that Metheny rant was great.

But when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, ###### up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks

absolutely wonderful.

I didn't listen to the Metheny rant yet, but I must say his own playing sometimes strolls into dangerously smooth territory, from what I've heard.

SoSH, I may have heard them at some point, I really don't know. I have listened to a few college stations in my time.

the metheny rant is written down so you don't have to listen to it, it's great and worth the read. He says he was fine with Kenny G until he overdubbed Louis Armstrong, then he compared him to a music necrophiliac (great line)
