White Sox should have bigger concerns than Oney Guillen’s tweets

Too Hot To Handle! Oney, wheeler dealer!

Meet Oney Guillen, the second of White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen’s three sons—and the one making his father seem like a wallflower.

Oldest son Ozzie Jr. is considered the smart one and youngest son Ozney the talented one, especially on the diamond. As far as certain members of the Sox’ front office are concerned, however, Oney is suddenly the dangerous one.

He put his Twitter account on the shelf last season at the request of the team, and now it seems OneyRoberto—his latest account in the world of social media—is being watched by Big Brother in the Sox’ front office.

That much was obvious by a tweet he sent out Wednesday that read: ‘‘I love it how people are monitoring my tweets like I’m someone important. Everyone is entitled to there[sic] own opinion.’‘

So why are the Sox taking an interest in what Oney has to say? Well, he does know a little about the game, considering he was the one who told his father to put Geoff Blum in the game during Game 3 of the 2005 World Series. A Blum home run later, the Sox were on their way to a sweep and their first championship in 88 years.

But the kicker in all of this is that Oney works for the Sox on the scouting side of things.

Apparently, someone in the organization thinks trying to keep a saddle on one sharp-tongued Guillen is enough, let alone two.

REASON TO BE OPTIMISTIC

Andruw Jones is in shape and hitting, Alex Rios understands "Chicago tough" a bit more and is hitting, and Carlos Quentin is healthy and hitting.

This "Chicago tough" thing is really stupid. The fact that Ozzie Guillen and Kenny Williams seem to buy into it is doubly stupid.

How many towns have the self-absorbed opinion that playing in those towns is terribly difficult? I know it's beaten to death in Boston at great length, New York, Chicago apparently, Philadelphia seems to have a bit of that, are there others?

Philadelphia has a lot of that.

"Chicago tough" is only partly about playing in the spotlight of the big city. There's also this thinking that you need to be get your uniform dirty to play in Chicago, particularly on the South Side - that loafing, real or perceived, is not tolerable.

Part of it is "fake hustle" - the Chicago media loves guys who look like they're trying hard. Alex Rios has already gotten the reputation of "not caring", which usually puts you in the crosshairs.

Ozzie Jr., Oney and Ozney? That's, uh, kinda weird.

Not that weird is wrong or anything. But... yeah. Pretty easy for someone to mix those up, at least.

Joe Cowley's garbage has finally dropped to the level of unreadable. (Although I realize that I may be the last one to realize this.)

Of the biggest American cities, only Los Angeles seems to be exempt. I don't think I've ever heard someone say "can he handle playing in Los Angeles?", or "is he an L.A. type of player?" here.

Both Toronto and Montreal have the reputation of being hard on hockey players of all types. Edmonton has the reputation of being hard on local hockey players, mostly because there's nowhere to hide.

I can't think of any other Canadian city that has a reputation (self-promoted or otherwise) of being hard on a specific type of pro athlete.

He went to the Roger Clemens Progeny Naming Seminar.

Blum pinch hit in the 14th inning...I had assumed the White Sox didn't have any position players left.

And fell asleep halfway through the George Forman Progeny Naming Seminar.

Be thankful that it wasn't the George Foreman Progeny Naming Seminar.

Well Joe, unlike you, the White Sox brass is capable of doing more than one thing at once! See, they can be concerned about Oney's tweets (and given that twitter is seemingly like giving folks ether and then a very loud microphone, I don't blame them) and also worry about the product on the field.

Crowley is lucky he entered the sports media workforce before the digital revolution. Otherwise he'd be in his mom's basement with a blog that doesn't even show in the first page of Google for the string, "White Sox Blog".

Something of the reverse. When Manny was dealt to the Dodgers, there did seem to be a "LA is the kind of town that Manny can thrive in, since we just let our stars be themselves" chorus. Plaschke is not a subscriber to that theory, however.

L.A. is one of those weird places where it leaves their sports stars alone unless they're dating a celebrity.

Ozzie to Oney: 'Hey kid we are behind you. No matter what.'

'Which is why we were in a position to kick your ass out the door.'
