And the Dodgers don't exactly seem like they're anxiously awaiting his return from the DL. It really wouldn't be a shock to see him end up on the White Sox or Rays within a couple weeks.
I'd imagine fans of either Sox can't be terribly thrilled about it ;-)
Kila just got called up (which doesn't mean the Sox couldn't have made a run). Bowker got traded to the Pirates (again the Sox could have made a run). Williams inquiring about Johnson might just finally convince the Rays to call him up. :-)
Lance Berkman doesn't scare me in the least.
I hear that Jermaine Dye is available.
It is. That's a gaping hole, and it doesn't speak well of Kenny that he (1) went with a ridiculous Jones - Kotsay platoon to start the season, which everyone knew was a mistake, and (2) hasn't been able to fix the problem. Whether letting Thome go was his idea or Ozzie's, it was a clear (and massive) error.
I half agree. Andruw Jones would be fine if he only faced lefties (against whom he's hitting .235/.350/.515). It's Kotsay who's the problem (vs. RHP's, he's at .238/.320/.379). (By comparison, Thome is at .273/.423/.614 against righties.)
He has potential, but why pay $8 million + for a fifth starter (especially one repped by Boras)? Next season they're still going to need a DH, a 3B (unless they plan to use Teahen or Vizquel, which is insanity), a C, and maybe a 1B. How about spending some money on offense, Kenny?
I think he would've been fine, for the right price. He gets on base, hits righties, hits for a little power, and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
He wasn't even really traded as much as he was thrown in at the last second so he could leave the organization. Kenny Williams could have traded an imaginary player for him.
Kenny and Ozzie are NOT going to play a blocked AAA guy at DH during August and September of a pennant race. We can all wish and hope that they reach the point of enlightenment where they would do so, but it's not going to happen.
Right, because they have Flowers that they are blocking themselves.
I'm also to the point where Dan Johnson is a AAAA bat.
Whether letting Thome go was his idea or Ozzie's, it was a clear (and massive) error.
It was Ozzie's. He made comments to the fact that the Sox won't have base-cloggers at Sox Fest. And when the season started, Kenny made comments that he didn't do enough to give the Sox offensive options.
It's a shame the Sox are 4th in HR in the AL, and 8th in R. Get on base!
Next season they're still going to need a DH, a 3B (unless they plan to use Teahen or Vizquel, which is insanity), a C, and maybe a 1B.
3B is Teahen's to lose. Kenny gave him a big extension when he was acquired. 1B, I'd assume would be Viciedo's to lose unless a) Konerko takes a discount rate or b) the Sox can get Prince Fielder. C, who knows? You'd think Flowers would get a chance, but I can easily see them dumping him to keep AJ. This is Ozzie and Kenny.
Pun intended?
Have you seen The Club? That show makes it patently clear that Williams wanted to bring Thome back, and Guillen fought him on the issue.
Guillen has said that if he were a GM, he'd put together a lineup of nine scrappy guys who could bunt and play defense, and spend all his money on pitching. He then acknowledged that he'd be a crappy GM.
I'm actually surprised that Lance Berkman was the most significant bat to change hands. I get that the Nats still think they can keep Dunn, but I'm stunned that Luke Scott is still an Oriole.
I see your extensive Sox knowledge knows no color limitations.
You can tell Ozzie doesn't like the idea:
I was joking about Dye, but he'd probably be about as good an option.
BTW, White Sox winning percentage over their last 50 games: .740 (37-13).
The White Sox know pitching.
I still wake up with cold sweats and the name of Jaime Navarro on my lips, but I guess it's time to recognize it's a new millennium.
And it turns out the Sox didn't give up anything good for Todd Ritchie, after all.
And the fault for that lies with Williams. It's his job to be the parent and say 'no' when he needs to.
Of course Hudson has struggled mightily as well since the trade.
Good point.
