Wieters to be called up by Orioles (on Friday)

The Baltimore Orioles are readying the welcome mat for their much-talked-about prized prospect.

Catcher Matt Wieters will be recalled by Baltimore on Friday and make his major league debut at home that night against the Detroit Tigers.

“It’s time. He’s ready,” Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said during a MASN radio interview Tuesday night.

He is coming.

In Baseball Mogul, I drafted Strausburg in 2009, and signed Wieters after the 2011 when the O's failed to offer him arbitration for some reason. My computer promptly imploded and devolved into a singularity of infinite baseball greatness.

No, it gives proper deference to the immense gravitational pull of one Matt Wieters, even while on the bench.

Wieters on the bench has more Win Shares then Adam Eaton on the Field.

This looks like it'll be a great week for Orioles fans. Berken made his debut tonight, David Hernandez will be up on Thursday, Wieters on Friday, Matusz is coming on strong...

BTW, Wieters was 4-4 with a walk tonight. I guess he decided to start preparing for the majors.

You mean he decided to warn the majors about his 5-for-4 game on Friday night?

I thought we'd have to wait a couple more weeks, so this is pretty awesome.

I'm pretty stoked about Hernandez's debut as well.

I'm totally hemming and hawing whether to add Matt Wieters' debut to the May 29th and 2009 pages of Wikipedia. It's like Christmas, Hannukah, the 4th of July and your Birthday wrapped into one.

Now that all the HILARIOUS Wieters jokes are out of the way, can I bring up that to my knowledge, this won't really guarantee he's not a Super 2? Since that seems to have been 90% of the reason for leaving him down, and they've waited this long, why not wait a little longer? It's not like he's crushing the ball right now.
   20. Gamingboy  Posted: May 26, 2009 at 10:03 PM (#3195023)

Now he's Mauer with SUPERpower.

It's not like he's crushing the ball right now.

He was 4-4 tonight and is batting .330/.398/.582 in May.

I assume that they either (a) did the math/research and determined that they are very safe from the Super-2 date or (b) decided that the benefits of calling him up a few weeks early was worth the risk.

Based on how methodical MacPhail can be, I'm guessing it's a.
   22. Tripon  Posted: May 26, 2009 at 10:12 PM (#3195033)
Tim Dierkes of MLBtraderumors did the math:

Since the Orioles were patient with him, Wieters likely won't become a Super Two player. Even if he never sees the minors after his weekend debut, he'll accumulate just 129 days of service time this year and won't have enough experience to become a Super Two after 2011. Every player to become a Super Two in the last three offseasons has had at least two years, 130 days service time.

Fair enough on both counts. 129 is still close to 130, and I'm not sure Ballmer should get the benefit of the doubt that they know what they're doing, but we'll see. I had seen Wieters's overall #s but didn't realize he was hitting so well lately.

Interesting. I bet if the Orioles' catchers weren't reaching hitherto unapproached levels of crappy performance, Wieters would have been down until beyond the All-Star break.

Nope. I'm thoroughly sick of him, and I've never even seen him once.

I don't wish him long term suckitude, just a nice two year breaking in period with a 250/320/400 line would be fine.

This could also spell the end of Jamie Walker's Oriole career.

Walker wears #32, which Wieters wore for his entire college career and most of his professional career.

He's also terrible, and the Orioles need to make a roster move to bring Scott off the DL, but the uniform number angle is more fun.

Every player who has become a Super Two in the last three offseasons has debuted in 2004 through 2006. Doesn't it seem like teams have gotten much more savvy with avoiding Super Two status for their stud players in the last few years, meaning that the Super Two designation post-2011 is likely to hit players with less than two years, 130 days service time? Although ...

Berken made his debut tonight, David Hernandez will be up on Thursday, Wieters on Friday,

Throw in the quick ascensions of Reimold and Bergesen, and a cynic might say that the Orioles are trying to flood the 2009 rookie pool with players who debuted before Weiters, thus increasing the amount of service time that will be likely to lead to Super Two designation post-2011.

I guess calling those guys up first couldn't hurt, but it only really helps with Wieters if Bergesen, Berken, Hernandez, and Reimold stay in the majors for good.

Chances are pretty good that some (or all) of them will struggle and spend some more time in the minors over the next couple years.

His number has already been retired by all 30 teams.

I've heard that the Orioles have quite a few good pitching prospects in the low minors. With Wieters, Markakis, Reimold...is it possible they're going to be competitive within the next three years?

is the hype in Baltimore as big as the hype on the web? I know when Wallace gets called up, he'll get a rousing applause but I doubt it will increase attendence in St Louis(although to be fair St Louis attendence is always high)
