Yankees’ Cashman to sign three-year deal

Brian Cashman has agreed to return as the Yankees general manager on a three-year contract, Newsday has learned.

Cashman deliberated over the decision about whether it was time to move on after 11 seasons as GM, but gave the Yankees an affirmative answer this afternoon. In the end, a Yankees source said, it came down to what was best for his family. The new contract will be for slightly more than Cashman had been making, putting it at in the ballpark of $2-million per year.

Neither Cashman nor Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner, with whom Cashman negotiated the deal, could immediately be reached for comment. The two work closely together, and met at Yankee Stadium on Monday, and that relationship was a huge positive for Cashman in making up his mind.

The Yankees are expected to make an official announcement this afternoon.

Who could resist a chance at putting together a 200 million dollar team. It's worth the distractions.

Seems like a no-brainer.

* There's no solid in-house replacement.

* The terms carry him through the end of his manager's contract

* There's something like $85-90 million coming off the books

* Let's him continue rebuild of farm system

There's lots of Moose Kremlinology making the rounds, but from the Sunday interview that Pete Abe posted (the french fries one), it seemed to me that to the extent that there is a chance Moose returns, it was contingent on Cashman coming back.

So this is good not only in and of itself (SJ and Sean McNally echo my sentiments), but as it relates to what may well be the Yanks most important FA...

(Plus, I'm a huge Moose fan, and would really, really like to see him pitch one or two more seasons with his new pitching style).

The only suitable replacement would have been Gene Michael or to bring back Buck Showalter as GM. This is great news.

Buck Showalter would not be a good choice for GM.

I wouldn't mind seeing Stick come back or even Bob Watson.

The big question is, are they going to let Cashamn due his job?

Didn't a bunch of guys threaten to leave when Torre left?

Why on earth would the Moose care?

Posada and Mo both made noises when they were negotiating their contracts, probably just to get more money. It worked.

1. Because he implied as much;

2. Because a new GM might mean a change in the Yankee organization that Mussina is not comfortable with.....

I think this is really good news...for Red Sox fans. Cashman is the Melky Cabrera of GMs.

In his recent YES interview with Michael Kay, Posada described Torre as a second father. I'm not convinced money was the motivating factor in the lobbying for him. Posada and Rivera both knew they were going to get paid.

Cashman's judgment seems mediocre at best to me.

#17 is Primey-worthy. Well played.
