Yankees RHP Sergio Mitre suspended 50 games

New York Yankees pitcher Sergio Mitre has received a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy. Like Philadelphia Phillies reliever J.C. Romero, Mitre claims he had no desire to break baseball rules and that he took the banned substance unwittingly after purchasing a legal supplement at a GNC store in Florida.

The commissioner’s office on Tuesday officially announced Mitre’s suspension.

Mitre told ESPN.com that while he takes “full responsibility” for his actions. He said he failed a drug test because a trace amount of androstenedione appeared without his knowledge in a nutritional supplement that he bought at GNC.

Is there any evidence that these so-called "nutritional supplements" do baseball players any good? Why take any risks at all?

I'm mostly just surprised that Sergio Mitre is on the Yankees.

Why would that be surprising? Everyone else is on the Yankees...

Yeah, but the only thing Mitre had going for him was his beard; he's not a good pitcher. If he makes the Yankees and has to shave, he'll be just another random scrub.

In Feinsteins book, Living on the Black, this why Glavine said he wouldn't take over the counter things like creatine. Sounded extra cautious but loooks like he was right.

Wouldn't it be easier to just say which Yankees aren't suspended for using steroids?

SHOCKING! Something tells me this is going to be the next defense when a baseball player beats his wife, drives drunk, evades taxes, or runs out of the baseline.

So the 50 game suspension occurs while he is rehabbing his arm from Tommy John surgery-sounds fair.

Well, there's this study, in which 15% of non-steroid supplements were found to have been contaminated with steroids.
