You can’t script baseball: In defense of Willie Randolph

This ain’t March, man...but it’s still only April!

The murmurs from fans and sportswriters alike have become more and more pervasive with every passing game and one thing has become clear: there is at the very least a loud minority that will never accept Willie regardless of what the team does.

3) Willie is improving. You may not want to acknowledge it, but Willie is managing very differently than he did in 2007. He is constantly shuffling the lineup to see what works, double switching, has tried two (albeit unsuccessful) suicide squeezes. He has even started to manage the bullpen better, despite the fact that no manager can successfully manage a bullpen that has to pitch 4+ innings every single day. Willie’s biggest flaw, in my opinion, is his stubbornness, and I think he has been working on that so far this season.

4) Not everything is Willie’s fault. I know that one is hard to believe, but it’s true. A manager is a terrific scapegoat, because it’s hard to pin a loss on one player. But think about how crazy it is - would Bobby Cox have motivated the Mets to come back on Wednesday? Would Joe Girardi have willed Heilman not to give up grand slams? Would Jim Leyland get Delgado out of his slump? Please. The reality is that fans are frustrated, which is understandable, and just want to see some accountability. I think most fans who want him fired think firing Willie would show that the organization cares about winning. Well, that’s not really true...firing Willie after an over .500 April would be a knee-jerk reaction that would likely throw the entire team off course in the short term and wouldn’t necessarily improve the team in the long term.

Repoz, turn the calendar page, man. It's May.

double switching

Oh, one of my pet peeves.

With relatively rare exception, there is absolutely no reason to double-switch in today's game. The only time double-switching makes sense is when you expect to use the reliever you're bringing in to start the next inning (and he's due up in-between) or for a defensive switch you were going to make anyway. Given the way relievers are used these days, this almost never happens.

He is constantly shuffling the lineup to see what works, double switching, has tried two (albeit unsuccessful) suicide squeezes.

These could also be indications of a desperate manager.

Um, whose fault do you think it is that the bullpen ahs to pitch 4 innings everyday? THat's right - Willie's. Sheesh.

Sort of. Why is Girardi in this group? But generally, yes, Cox wouldn't have been in the situations that Randolph is. When he has the horses, Cox usually wins.

Willie stumbled into the proper lineup when Castillo missed a few games, and then ####### forgot the proper lineup. HE doesn't need to "fiddle with it". HE can just keep Church in the 2-hole and Castillo hitting 8th.

Yes, but that happens plenty. And Willie screws it up.

Willie's biggest flaw is that he doesn't know #### about his own players, and he likes having three second basemen on the roster.

Schoeneweis is a LOOGY. He gets BOMBED by RHBs, but WIllie brings him in to face RHBs all the time. It's gorss ignorance of SS' skills. And he does the opposite wrong thing with Pedro II.

Why is Girardi in this group?

Because he's the manager of the Yankees, silly. The Yankees.

If you're going to begin the season with Randolph as manager, it makes little sense to fire him at this point, with the team's record slightly above .500 (and not a whiff of contribution from Pedro Martinez). Now if they were significantly below .500, or the team had mutinied against him, that would be a different story.

Basically, the people that want Randolph fired now are the ones who didn't want him brought back after last season. Minaya, clearly, is operating under a different MO. I can't see him making a change, if at all, until at least June.

Also, I'm curious who the anti-Randolph crowd would like to see chosen as his successor. Who are some of the realistic candidates?

Rickey. For the post-game quotes alone...

Gallagher! I hear he's playing for the Cubs now, but we'll just offer him a bigger hammer to be player/manager.

Uh, yeah, what?

Those pitchers aren't taking themselves out of the game. Willie has too quick of a hook.

That's crazy, Chris. Twice this season when yanked, Oliver Perez had nearly given up a run. And a third time, Perez had just gotten two consecutive outs.

Clearly, Oliver Perez needs to go.

Sure, Perez is always properly hooked. My bad. <g>
