After 15 seasons as a baseball coach at Arizona State University, Pat Murphy has decided to resign, according to a news release sent out on November 20, 2009. The release gave no reason for the decision, and ASU said his cell phone was broken when reporters tried to reach him for comment. Hm.
Murphy came to Arizona from Notre Dame in 1994. Under his tutelage, the Arizona Sun Devils made it to the College World Series four times, in 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2009. ASU’s record was 629-284-1 while he was coaching the team. He also groomed a few major league players: Andre Ethier (LA Dodgers) and Dustin Pedroia (Boston Red Sox).
Curious decision.
