Zolecki: Domonic Brown Is On His Way

The Phillies just announced they have placed Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.

They selected the contract of Domonic Brown to take his place.

The Brown era begins.

no word yet on where he'll hit in the lineup. with rollins and victorino out for a little while, the other options for the top of the lineup are polanco, ransom, dobbs, valdez, and ruiz, so, while putting brown 1 or 2 is not really ideal, about the only better option would be to start ben francisco in CF and bat him leadoff, but if that was the plan, they'd have called up john mayberry instead of brown.

I can't think of when I was so excited to see a rookie come up. DOMination time!

Realistically, for this year, I hope he holds his own.

Maybe they can implant a couple of brain cells into Bonehead-orino while he's on the DL.

Well, when Strasburg was sent to the majors. But this could be very exciting.

Well done, Larry, well done.

In other news, Jesus Montero is getting closer and closer to that coveted #1 BA ranking.

In a year with Mike Stanton and Jason Heyward both making their season debuts, Domonic Brown has a large hurdle to climb.

Just browsing:

Michael Taylor is starting to hit a little, too late, he's at .269/.346/.400 with a month to go, I don;t think you can say that his year has been anything other than a complete disaster.

Chris Carter has gotten up to .254/.357/.521, disappointing but not a Taylor level catastrophe

Yeah, Brown's been raking, .327/.391/.589, with his SLG going .417 to .504 to .589 as he's gone from the Sallie League to AAA... I think even MWE would agree that he's improved as he's gone up the ladder.

That's his PCL not MLB numbers, coming off a year he hit .329/.422/.570 between AA and AAA.
You don't think losing 100 OPS points is disappointing?

They selected the contract

I see this nomenclature all the time this year, and I don't ever remember it before. Teams either purchased the contract, or recalled the player. Is there a reason why the terminology has changed? Or am I just imagining it?

The NL East is doing quite well in the uber-prospect makes MLB debut category. Does Ike Davis count as the mets entrant in the contest?

In much the same way as Andy Marte was the Braves' entrant into the great 3B prospect bonanza a few years ago.

No idea if the nomenclature has changed but this phrasing is certainly more representative of what's really happening. The purchasing of the contract really dates from before the existence of farm systems. There might still be legal technicalities that make it a "purchase" but, for all intents and purposes, Brown was already under contract to the Phillies and they aren't buying the contract from themselves.

Unreasonably high standards off the starboard bow, Cap'n!

Well, it's not a disaster (and nice power and walks) but a 254 BA in AAA (in the PCL!) must translate to, what, 185 in Oakland. :-)

Why is Starlin Castro getting no love? His late call-up means he's probably just barely going to qualify for the batting titles, and he's now at 308/358/445 (107 OPS+) while playing SS. Total Zone Total Fielding Runs doesn't like his defense, but BIS does. He seems to be one of the few reasons for a Cub fan to have joy at this point.

I forgot to mention that he's outhitting Ike Davis (and 3 years younger), and is only behind Heyward on about 30 points of OBP (while being younger).

As much as I love Montero, I don't think BA will ever put him number one. They love Trout far too much to put him behind Jesus. If Trout makes the majors before Montero, then something will probably have gone terribly wrong with Jesus.

It'll still be far too early to say. Jesus peaked in his early 30s.

Is it Domonic or Dominic? Because ML Splits has it as the latter. Anyway, cumulative MLE is 0.268 0.318 0.449.

My MLE spreadsheet (based on old MGL calculations) has Brown at 279/335/454.

Brown just easily scored from first standing up on a ground double into the LF corner that was fielded cleanly. He has an incredibly long stride. I see why people have trotted out the Strawberry comparison. Yea, it would be fun if he hit anywhere near as well as Strawberry.

For his sake, let us hope that's the only comparison we'll ever make with the Strawman.

2010 is certainly a memorable year for rookies, particularly in the National League.

Well who isn't? :-)

and is only behind Heyward on about 30 points of OBP (while being younger).

Well then let's not forget super-stud Tyler Colvin -- 265/319/548. Way behind Heyward on OBP but way ahead on SLG and ISO.

(No of course I don't expect it to continue but it sure is fun while it lasts)

Heyward's issue at the moment is 1 HR in his last 158 PA. From June 1 he somehow has just a 59 ISO. Take it back to May 5 (yes, cherry-picked) and it's only 3 HR in 251 PA and an ISO of 122 (decent 2B and 3B rates). The power has been missing for a while now.

If you'd have asked me which of Colvin and Heyward was more likely to turn into Brett Butler, I wouldn't have guessed Heyward. :-)

He's actually improved his AAA OPS this year. In only 451 PA's. And he's still only 23.

When he came up the first time to the standing ovation, the D-Back announcers made a special point of saying "see...this is how knowledgeable fans respond to something like this". It was a freakin' instructional video to a fan base that is, being honest, quite dim.
