I can see both Barton and Buck topping a 112 OPS+, not that it's likely or anything, just that Giambi may be more depth than actual upgrade to the starting lineup.

Cust and Giambi? Bring back Matt Stairs too!

The all "screw defense, we'll beat them 12-11" team, post-2000 edition:

C: Mike Piazza
1B: Jason Giambi
2B: Dan Uggla
SS: Hanley Ramirez
3B: Ryan Braun
LF: Manny Ramirez
CF: ?
RF: Jermaine Dye

Post-2000 CF would be Bernie.

Also, I thought that Piazza was just really bad at throwing runners out, but otherwise pretty average defensively?

I didn't realize Jermaine Dye was that bad, but lo and behold, a quick check of his stats shows he really is.

I think that Brian Giles played center one year, how about Soriano? Griffey? Or are we only looking at players who played a position for a period of time as opposed to about a season?

I would put Vlad in RF. I'm not sure what the numbers say, but he is damn painful to watch out there.
   8. aleskel Posted: January 13, 2009 at 03:34 PM (#3050563)
oh, and Soriano should be at 2B instead of Uggla
   9. DCA Posted: January 13, 2009 at 04:04 PM (#3050588)
Isn't Griffey in center the obvious choice? I would go with Cantu at 2B, and either Young or Jeter -- despite both having gold gloves -- at shortstop. Hanley hasn't had enough career to render a decision.

The A's lucked out this offseason in that there are a glut of defensively-challenged sluggers, which is something that they sorely need given the woeful offense.

A run is a run, and adding a defensively challenged player who has to play the field because of Cust seems like it would help/hurt any other team just as much as it would the A's.

The 34 runs despite 18 dingers seems sadly reasonable.

other cf candidates: lance berkman, ken griffey jr (post 2000), nick swisher
   12. plim Posted: January 13, 2009 at 06:53 PM (#3050854)
edit: dca already beat me to griffey...

Thanks Dan.

Some people at athleticsnation did some analysis and thought that the defensive difference between Barton and Giambi made them roughly equals overall in 2009. I think they are crazy what do you think?
   14. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: January 13, 2009 at 11:52 PM (#3051138)
It depends on whether the defensive metric you're using counts dropped popups.
   15. Marcel Posted: January 14, 2009 at 06:36 PM (#3051804)
SS should be Jeter. Ramirez was really bad in 07, but that may be an outlier as he was only below average in both 06 and 08. Jeter, on the other hand, has been awful for quite some time now.

I'd say Swisher in CF, and maybe Brad Hawpe in RF? all I know is that Hawpe was something like -40 runs in right field in last season's UZR/150.

The all "screw defense, we'll beat them 12-11" team, post-2000 edition:

Wouldn't that really just involve putting the top 8 hitters on the field, regardless of position?
Like your starting shortstop would be Jim Thome?

No, because the object is to win, not to merely score as many runs as possible. So you only stick a guy at a position he's already playing, or played very recently.

Surely Abreu gets consideration for RF, he's been dreadful the past couple of years....he says too lazy to compare the metrics. But just from some of the games I saw, every ball hit to him seemed an excersise in futility.
