Back From Sabbatical, Yankees DFAed Morgan Ensberg

New York Yankees - Designated 1B-3B Morgan Ensberg for assignment; recalled P Scott Patterson.

Speaking of ulcers, the Yankees just cauterized their own. Ensberg was a fine, underrated player, a valuable defensive player and a good hitter, but he's been a completely different player since he started having shoulder problems. He played through them with the Astros and while he can still wait for his pitch, he can't do a damn thing with his pitch anymore. Best thing for Ensberg is to not try to come back and try instead to seek other treatment for his shoulder. If he can't really get physically and mentally to where he was, he might as well retire, because he's a multi-millionaire and not current a major league caliber player. It wasn't a bad gamble for the Yankees given how good a player Ensberg was and how well he would have fit the team if he was even 60% as good as he used to be, but it didn't work out nicely. The ZiPS projection is speculative, the computer doesn't know that this isn't the same Ensberg from 2005 and even the first half of 2006.

Sorry you missed Manny's 5000th long one, Szym. I was puzzled why you didn't show but never emailed me either.

Well, glad you're feeling better.

Oh, didn't the lounge tell you? I told a certain someone to pop in there, though it appears the request was for Ken to email me.

In other words, send me your mailing address again and we'll grab a beer next time I'm near there.

Stay cool Dan.

There really hasn't been much to go on with Ensberg this year. He never got an extended shot at playing time, and with hitters like him, that usually seems to be important.

Ensberg is going to be an excellent broadcaster once he retires, if he so chooses (and someone has the brains to give him a shot).

My favorite non-star of the last 20 years. I hope he gets well and starts tearing it up again, but I really doubt it will happen.

When Cust was playing like crap and missing, at least he was still taking mighty cuts at the plate. When Ensberg connects with the ball this season, it looks like he hit it with a nerf bat.

Of course, I also thought Smoltz would retire due to injuries in 7 years ago, so shows what I know.

I'm disappointed that there was no handle change, as requested. Check to see if strawberries are on the approved list before eating them.

Oh, and you're stupid.

The problem w/ 74 PA w/ a very, very streaky player like Ensberg is that it's basically impossible to tell whether it's him or 74 PA that's the problem. He's 32 and time ain't going backwards (not yet).

He's been my favorite player for the last few years, and I hope he can help someone out.

Sorry to hear about your ulcer, Dan - best of luck in your recovery! Stay away from Felix Unger.

and mo was simply never ever the same after he came back in july 06 - his shoulder really wasn't better and he lost all power in his swing.

he was kept in the minors way too long and his career was good but too short. too many astros fans never liked him even when he was really REALLY good because he walked a lot.

sigh

he's a very intelligent guy who speaks very well so there is no way he'd ever be a national broadcaster

Glad to hear you're ok, Dan. Will send a keg of Hamms and 10 pounds of Italian Sauage your way to celebrate. :)
