Repeating what I said in the other thread... everyone in the Pirates' rotation is pretty much the same guy. They're all youngish, they all have middling stuff and have to nibble at the corners constantly, and they all have around 5-6 K's per nine and 5 walks per nine. Why they felt like they should trade a relief pitcher that actually strikes people out for another one of guys is anybody's guess.

And it's not like the Altoona bullpen is overflowing with talented pitchers, either. It's been a pretty good bullpen, but Danny Moskos is moving up any day now, and Corey Hamman (age 30, ERA 12.79) is on the team, which one presumes means there's really nobody else in A ball ready to step in there.

Honestly, I can't imagine why the Pirates would do this.

They probably need a replacement for Charlie Morton, whom they will probably waive now because he obviously sucks since he has a 1-9 record.

EDIT: in case the Canadian sarcasm is not evident, I think Charlie Morton can have a career for the next 5-7 (+more?) years as a SP with a decent team that has decent coaches. I hope they DO release him, actually, since some are so down on him for being 1-9. Good luck with Eveland, and yeah Dan I also think Eveland has lost weight. Sorry I don't have any info on the minor leaguer but, yeah, unless you secretly know he's got a blown labrum why not keep him, wait two more days, and give up nothing by calling Eveland's agent and signing him to minor league deal?

After thinking about it for another day, I still don't get this at all from the Pirates' perspective.

It's like when I heard about the Aramis Ramirez trade on the radio, and I was confused enough about the sensory information I was receiving that I momentarily thought I'd had a stroke.

Beats me. So what if they lost out on Eveland? That's like worrying about losing out on a styrofoam cup at a silent auction.

I thought people used to think Eveland had good stuff? At least, that was the impression that the Brewers announcers tried to give. Were they wrong or has Eveland's stuff gotten much worse over the past few years? He never had the huge fastball but he was consistently in the 90s when he was a Brewer, which I thought was pretty good for a lefty. Plus, he got a good amount of K's in both the minors and the majors when he was with Milwaukee. I see that his K/9 has been terrible the past few years in the majors.

The thing I always disliked about Eveland was that his walk rate was pretty good in the minors (or at least, not bad) which led one to believe that he had OK control. That was not the case though. He was even more frustrating to watch than the team's other young lefty at the time, Jorge De La Rosa.

Eveland's stuff in Toronto was less than impressive. His fastball was regularly 87-88 (and pretty straight), his curve, while it had lots of break, was more of a lolipop and definitely not thrown on the same original plane as the fastball (leading to early batter recognition and infrequent strike calls (fairly or not)) and his change was incredibly inconsistant (although not a bad pitch when it was on). I was left wondering how he k'd so many batters in the minors. Unless there is a mechanical adjustment to be made to fix one or two of these issues, I do not see him having MLB stuff - all of which surprised me given his minor league numbers. I had assumed that control was his problem, but I think his control issues are symptomatic of his stuff (i.e. he nibbles so much because his stuff will get crushed otherwise).

Not any longer. Just sent down to the NY-P League.

Whatever the quality of Eveland's stuff, there was something else the Brewers didn't like about him, since they only gave him five starts and then traded him after his age-23 season.

Before his age 23 season, actually. I didn't like him either but he got a lot of hype among Brewer fans because of his low ERAs (in the minors) and nice K and BB numbers. That said, the team gave him up in an awful trade. Melvin seems to like to throw useful prospects into trades for some reason. There's no way a 23 year old guy with Eveland's minor league track record should have been used as an enticement in order to get Arizona to give up Greg Aquino, imo. There's no upside using him in a deal like that. Better to hang onto him and see what you have, even if his first 60 major league innings weren't especially encouraging.

...and bye bye Uviedo, the Eveland chapter closes in Toronto.

Did someone claim him? I don't think the Jays were giving up on him; just that they had to get him off the 40-man roster to make room for Reyes.

(Be funny if Pittsburgh claimed him.)
