Brewers - Acquired His Rotundity
Milwaukee Brewers - Acquired P
C.C. Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians for 1B
Matt LaPorta, P
Zach Jackson, P
Rob Bryson and a player to be named.
Back when the Brewers drafted Matt LaPorta, there was a lot of talk about how the Brewers simply drafted the best player available and even though they had Prince Fielder, they could always trade one of the two to fill a specific hole when the time came. Now, that ancient prophecy once foretold has been fulfilled by the sacred rite of, uh, R'Milwaukeewantsastartingpitcher.
It's not hard to see how this is a good trade for the Indians - I'd rather have LaPorta than the draft picks and the Indians apparently gave up on the prospect of re-signing Sabathia. Zach Jackson seems to be mainly filler at this point. Bryson's still down in the Sally League and while he's pitching well, he's still an A-ball reliever and with just fastball/slider, won't be a full-time starter. The Indians get to pick one of two players to finish off the trade and the early word is that it's probably going to be Taylor Green, who had a tremendous full-season debut in 2007 and can play fake 3B better than Mat Gamel (though Gamel's obviously the better hitter). Althouogh I'm suspicious of Taylor Green as Greens have a record of leading teams down a trail of tears. Tommy Greene? Tyler Green? Todd Greene? Khalil Greene? Willie Greene? David Green? It's a trail of tears, I tell ya.
For the Indians, adding Sabathia makes them a formidable team down the stretch. My only concern is if they really are going to make an attept to re-sign him. It enables them to let Sheets go, using the injury excuse (Sabathia's one of the most durable pitchers in baseball), but if they're unwilling to go 6-year, $120 million, I'm not sure I make this trade if I'm the Brewers. One-shot star trades don't interest me as much in a league with 8 playoff teams as it did when there were 4. I don't like rolling the dice this way in the weaker league - there's no glass ceiling of awesome teams to break through.

Love the Top Comps, even though Viola's not comparable because of his color.
Chicago Cubs - Placed MGR Moe Green on the 15-day DL, for what they report as inflammation of the eye.
"buy me out? No. I buy you out, you don't buy me out!"
Getting CC was not about making the playoffs, it was about winning the World Series. Since the advent of the wild card, I'd agree you don't need to be special to make the playoffs. In fact, the wild card teams have done just fine. The formula over the past decade seems to be, Wild Card and 2 Aces = World Series. Going from 1 Ace to 2 Aces makes all the difference in the playoffs. I would have done this deal.
I guess Oakland and Atlanta had one ace too many.
I'm still feeling that loss.
Only if he gets a wounded knee.
Heh, this took more posts than I thought! I think the only one I snuck past you guys was the time I made an entry and 50% of the words in the analysis were XTC song titles.
Dear God.
I think you want that passage to read "For the Brewers", Dan-o.
The funniest thing about that land grab is that the tribes that sold Manhattan to Peter Minuit for $24 worth of trinkets actually gave Minuit another tribe's land, so instead of Minuit scamming the natives, they scammed him.
I take offense to you calling out all Green's in this TO.
Sonofabitch! Do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!
But Minuit got the land anyway...
Also that $24 value was figured in 1846,
in 2007 terms that $24 was worth either:
$671.55 using the Consumer Price Index; or
$5,245.99 using an unskilled wage comparison; or
$10,925.25 using a nominal GDP per capita comparison; or
$162,447.37 using relative share of GDP
still seems like a bargain
The Brewers signed Rich Garces?
There was no subway line at that time. You need to factor that.
