Gathright for a 2nd backup MI (who can play a bit of OF) happened faster than i expected.

P Joey Gathright

I guess hits about as well as a pitcher. Considering the deal is cash neutral (Cubs pay rest of Gathright's $800K and O's pay rest of Freel's $3.3mil), this deal is a steal for the Cubs.

Dan,

Wells was drafted as a catcher and didn't become a pitcher until his 3rd season in the minors (age 21 season). He was just added to the 40 man roster last season.

That's not to say he's anything special, but he's perfect for the 6th-7th starter AAA shuttle role.

It's kind of embarrassing, but now that it's not 1 in the morning, I have to admit that I got Randy Wells completely confused with Randy Williams.

you have it the wrong way. Freel is an excellent defensive outfielder and a passable infielder. he commits a lot of errors, and can't play shortstop. his main roles are pinch runner / outfield defensive sub.

In true 2009 Cub fashion, Freel was in the original lineup for Saturday, but injured his hamstring before the game started.

[Chad Fox probably finally had his career end tonight, as well - he seemed to blow his arm out throwing a pitch]

Chad Fox threw a pitch?

Second appearance, even.

Chad Fox is still in baseball? I thought he retired about four years ago.

Looking up his record, it appears that he may as well have. He's got to be getting pretty close to the record for fewest innings thrown for a pitcher with 10 or more years in the majors.

Deja vu, didn't this also happen about 4 years ago?

I remember it well. It was one of the many "fire/kill Dusty" moments of 2004-2006.
