Indians - DFAed Herges
Cleveland Indians - Designated P Matt Herges for assignment.It's not often that teams, especially ones already having problems, designate their reliever with the lowest ERA for assignment. One would think that it's an indication that the Indians are getting "over" 2009 and looking forward. The player they add, Winston Abreu, picked up in exchange for Meloan, is hardly a prospect at 32 (a Dominican 32, at that), but Abreu has very little service time, was quite good for Chiba Lotte last year and absolutely ridiculous for Durham (32 IP, 14 H, 10 BB, 49 K, 1.41 ERA) this season. That's good enough for a 2.93 translation, though he's unlikely to keep that up.
Herges will turn up elsewhere. The Indians won't get some great prospect for him, but they should probably get someone at least on the level of the guys in the Hinske trade.

It was safe to expect Wood to be a good closer, Raffy Betancourt is a decent enough setup guy, Joe Smith looked likely to be another in the line of quietly reliable Steve Reed-Matt Miller righty sidewinders, Jensen Lewis had always been solid, and Rafael Perez had a career ERA+ of 156 heading into this season. That's five solid, reliable relievers. Pretty much every team in baseball has waiver bait like Vinnie Chulk and Zach Jackson around as mopup guys, so it's tough to hold that against them.
I'd be pretty impressed if someone would have been able to predict Wood sucking, Smith hurting his shoulder, Lewis allowing as many home runs in three months of '09 as the rest of his career combined, and Perez...I'm not sure anyone knows what the deal is with him.
You can hold a lot of things (starting rotation slots #2, #3, #4, and #5) against Shapiro, but he went out over the offseason and actively attempted to improve the bullpen. Did several things that were likely to work. It's just that none of them have worked.
Fire the guy running the drafts.
The entire philosophy of the organization is to come up with cheap, young, talented players that you've got under organizational control for six years. If they look like keepers after 2-3 years, you sign them to a long-term deal and buy out a year or two of free agency. Once those contracts end, trade them for cheap, young, talented players that you'll have under organizational control for six years. Rinse, repeat.
That only works if you actually develop cheap, young, talented players. If you aren't signing free agents and you aren't drafting well, the only way you get good players is to rip somebody off via trade. You can't do that forever.
2006, 2008 and 2009?
