Mariners - Released Sexson

Seattle Mariners - Released 1B Richie Sexson.

It was one thing to get rid of Richie Sexson last year when you can find someone willing to pay more than $0 of his salary and giving up a prospect younger than, say, John Candelaria, but when your team is so incompetent that you can't find designated hitters that barely hit better than the pitchers they replace (Mariners DHs: .525 OPS, Mariners Ps: .478 OPS), perhaps it would be prudent not to release the terrible hitter that you have to pay anyway. If you've put together a team in which Willie Bloomquist is one of the best available 1B starters, it's time to take a bath with a toaster.

Of course, we know the real reason Sexson played poorly - he never got to have the magic of Jose Vidro protecting him...

There's that power hitter the Rays wanted.

Wonder if he can play any LF. I won't mind the Braves taking a minimum wage flier on him if he could. He still hits lefties, and god knows, the Braves need that.

Certainly a better experiment than Julian Tavarez

Can't imagine that he'll be out of work for too long.

Richie is a one-dimensional player who's lost that dimension.

Wonder if he can play any LF.

I just check B-Ref, and he hasn't been there since 2000. Not a good idea.

If the Braves are going to trade Tex, they may as well pick up Sexson to get through the season. Big if, I know.

The Dbacks are leaning toward trading for Tony Clark over signing Sexson.
That's not an endorsement for Richie.

Then again, Sexson did have some awkward moments with Moorad when he departed from AZ
And Sexson doesn't have Tony's "Anybody, Anytime" mantra

Having Richie baby-sit 1B while someone develops from the minors, if the Braves trade Tex, seems like an awfully good idea to me. Shoot-platoon him with Thorman, and get 30 HR's and 156 inches out of 1B. If you trade tex, you resolve to suck the rest of this year and next, so Richie can stay through then, and you hope to get enough prospects for tex that your next good team shows up in 2010.

Sexson hasn't played well at all, but Safeco just seems like a death trap for right-handed power hitters anyway. It's not the hitter's park the Kingdome was and the ball just doesn't seem to carry in left-field. You could make the argument that Adrian Beltre and Sexson weren't that talented to begin with and they've come down to earth since signing with Seattle. But I can't think of any right-handed power hitter that's had a really good season at Safeco. Sexson did okay in his first year with the team and I recall Bret Boone always doing well in home games for a couple of years, but that's all I can think of. (A-Rod had a good season in 2000, but 3/4 of his homers were away.)

Remember when the Transaction Oracle killed the Brewers for trading Richie Sexson?

It's hard to believe that it was only 2005 when Sexson was an elite hitter, putting up .263/.369/.541 (144 OPS+, 7th in the AL) in Safeco. But once it went, it went quick.
