Marlins - Acquired Villone

Florida Marlins - Acquired P Ron Villone from the Seattle Mariners for P Mike Flannery and P Yorman Bazardo.

Not a bad pickup at all in return for a LOOGY - it seems the Mariners are the only team really collecting a few prospects the last 24 hours.  Bazardo is the key pickup here - a solid 21-year-old fastball/changeup guy who gets a lot of groundballs and if he’s not kept as a starter, could be a very good reliever someday.  Flannery’s a much lesser prospect, but could provide useful at the end of the bullpen, though more likely to get that role for the Rainiers.

Any move that gets Yorman Bazardo mentioned on here is cool.

Mariners are being proactive for the next couple of years. It seems they at least have a plan.

This won't be anough for the marlins to catch the braves, that's for sure.

Wow, another solid move by Bavasi. Who would've thunk it?

Bazardo has the build of Pedro Martinez, throws in the mid-90s, but he doesn't have a lot of movement on his pitches and thus is subject to being hammered. He also tends to run out of gas quickly. He really needs to develop another pitch or improve his current ones, otherwise I don't see him having a long career.

Flannery has been a minor league closer, with all of the caveats implied in that statement. He's got a low-90s fastball and a good but not great slider. He does have a reliever's intensity and doesn't back down from anyone, and I think he's got a chance of being successful in someone's bullpen down the road.

I think this is a good deal for the Marlins, because they didn't have to trade Scott Olsen or Josh Johnson, both of whom IMO have significantly more upside than does Bazardo, to upgrade the major league roster. Those two guys are also the reason why I think that Marlins made a smart move in not dealing Burnett; even if they don't resign him as a FA, they can probably replace him fairly quickly with either Olsen or Johnson, and they've still got Logan Kensing and now Adam Bostick coming along as well.
