I wonder if Pena coul learn to play first base. Maybe he'd be better there than in the field.

Was there ever a TO writeup for the Braves' signings of Lowe and Kawakami?

Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena - Theo's worst trade? Off the top of my head, yes.

It was probably a 4 win downgrade for the Sox in 2006, which wouldn't have pushed them into the playoffs unless you also wishcast for Josh Bard's career year to happen in Boston and Manny not malingering after Boston fell out of the pennant race. But what really sets it apart is the pure d1ckishness of trading Bronson Arroyo after he signed a below-market contract in the offseason because he liked Boston so much.

I hope this isn't against the rules, but here is a quote from Stephen Goldman on the Pinstriped Bible:

"The Mets signed Wily Mo Pena. If he makes it up to the big club, it will be interesting to see him wandering about in Citi's big outfield. Imagine the Hebrews in the desert, with more grass and less sand."

If only you got extra runs for "home run distance", he would be a very valuable player.

I'm pretty sure the Red Sox tried in spring of '07.

Manny malingered only after the Sox fell out, though. He was a monster in the home series in which the Red Sox got swept after learning about Ortiz's heart trouble.

Wow - Wily Mo played center field as recently as 2007.

Actually, a lot of people who have seen him regularly have said he's better in CF than the corners, for whatever reason. (And indeed, Strat-O-Matic rated him that way in 2005.)

he's better in CF than the corners

Because he gets confused by the curling ball flightpaths in the corners and takes bad routes, which he does less in CF.
Einstein he's not.
