Are you calling Hairston a player with defensive issues? That doesn't seem right, as the A's are playing him in center even when they also have Rajai in the outfield.

There's a very good reason Izturis is on the team -- he's a huge upgrade over the SSs they had last year.

I didn't think they'd get anything for Salazar, so this is a solid move IMO.

I don't see how this move helps the Padres. I think Salazer can be a decent hitter, but as a fulltime player he's only suited to 1b or DH.

I think you can dump salary, and do it a whole lot smarter than this. I don't get this. I know Meredith was logging mop-up innings, but I have to think his value was a whole lot higher than this. And he's not expensive. With teams ALWAYS needing bullpen help, its seems like you're selling short only getting a 31 year old bench player in return.

Does this end any chance of a Felix Pie trade? I'd love to see the Royals take a flyer on him.

Interesting chain of events. The Padres traded George Kottaras for Cla Meredith and everyone was impressed at their astute acumen after seeing how good Meredith was. And yet, even a good reliever whose trade value might be expected to have increased after he has proved himself in the majors...doesn't really see his trade value increase.

If Salazar is only a 1B, then I really wonder what SD is up to. I guess we'll have to wait for Depodesta to update his blog. I thought Kyle Blanks was a first baseman as well.

The Salazar trade solves the Orioles self-imposed roster crunch of only being allowed to carry 4 bench players (a side effect of a 12-man pitching staff). I still don't understand why the decision was between Pie and Salazar - Pie is the only bench player who can play CF, while Salazar is pretty redundant to Wigginton.

There aren't any players looming in the minors or DL that will create another bench crunch, unless Lou Montanez comes back way ahead of schedule. That said, I'm sure Pie is available for trade, but there is no pressure to move him now, so MacPhail would want a high-upside talent in return.

I have a co-worker whose wife had a new customer at work. The customer's paperwork had her name listed as Le-a. So my co-worker's wife addressed her as "Lee-ay".

The customer replied, "It's Ledasha, #####!"

A real charmer, that one.

Yes, he is a ROOGY, at least as far as the Padres were concerned. They only used him for >1 inning when it was mop up.

It's pretty irrelevant to the Orioles; the identity of the seventh reliever in the pen matters only to fantasy leagues with very deep rosters. What's he going to pitch, 30 innings for the Os this year? (Innings which could be easily eaten up by a 6-man bullpen, but that's a dead horse.)

I always felt that Chase Utley was a pretty WASPy name.

I just heard this from a young woman (a friend of my friend) at a Madison bar a couple weeks ago. Either there's several Ledashas out there, or the "urban legend" reply is accurate. I'm disappointed to learn that her story might not be true.

When it comes to stupid names, I always insist on pronouncing them phonetically, or occasionally some other even worse pronunciation if the name deserves it. Cla I pronounce like "clan" without the ending consonant. That makes the name sound as stupid as it looks. Same goes for Chone, and others I am not recalling at the moment. You spell it wrong, I say it wrong.

Hebrew names are still hot, with the top 5 all being from Hebrew and former also-ran names like Isaac and Caleb breaking comfortably into the top 50.

On the other hand, I have some serious issues with the parents of the 208 Jaggers, 213 Lyrics, and the 320 Aces born last year. I'm not sure I want to live in a world in which there are 3 times as many Brodys as Jeffreys.

My girlfriend is an occasional substitute teacher, and has had to call roll for kids named Sarin (like the gas, but pronounced like 'serene,' and yes the girl copped an attitude when the name was pronounced 'wrong'), Pervante, and Snoopdog in the last year.

I always thought "Sean Bean" was a funny name. It seems like it should either be pronounced "Seen Bean" or "Shawn Bawn". Imagine my disappointment when I found out that his parents foresaw that difficulty and actually named him "Shaun". He just uses "Sean" professionally because he thought it was memorable (and funny).
