Brilliant!

HAHAHAHA...Oh wait, I didn't read the body of the article yet...HHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHAAAA.

What a joke.

Transcript of the front office's discussions about what to do in the offseason.

Man O: "The reason we haven't been winning is that we haven't been giving multi-year, multi-million dollar deals to mediocre middle relievers".
Man W: "Agreed".
Man N: "Who is available? Walker and Baez."
Man E: Double any offers other teams give them.
Mad D: Take that, Red Sox and Yankees.
   3. Matt Waters Posted: November 28, 2006 at 01:51 AM (#2246974)
2. You left out the part where they all high five.
   4. Astro-Bonilla Posted: November 28, 2006 at 01:59 AM (#2246984)
And the part where they all shout WOOO!
   5. The Kids Are Enright (1k5v3L) Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:01 AM (#2246986)
When I tell young Dbacks fans what would've happened if Joe Jr. had remained the GM in AZ, I point to the Orioles.

That usually drives the point across.

Brilliant, Dan. And, to quote that band from AZ, "Congratulations I'm Sorry."
   6. Ignatius J. Reilly Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:14 AM (#2246995)
Plus they sign him before the arbitration deadline and owe the Braves their 2nd round pick(5th overall). When the Braves were contractually obligated not to offer him arbitration!!!
   7. Juan V is the mustard of your doom! Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:19 AM (#2247000)
Seriously now, how many of the O´s losses were wins blown by the ´pen? Since all this spending on relievers is... strange.
   8. The Kids Are Enright (1k5v3L) Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:21 AM (#2247002)
MIPK, doesn't that mean that the Braves cannot offer him arbitration anyhow, regardless of when he signs?
   9. Repoz Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:24 AM (#2247004)
Too much, Dan...just too ######' much.
   10. Ignatius J. Reilly Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:25 AM (#2247006)
I was under the impression that if he signed prior to the arby deadline the point was moot.

Am I confused?
   11. William K. Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:30 AM (#2247009)
I wonder how Dan will top this when the next moronic FA signing occurs
   12. Torn_cuff Posted: November 28, 2006 at 02:41 AM (#2247018)
The Orioles are just exploiting market inefficiencies. The last group of players to not be vastly overpaid...middle relievers. The Orioles are cornering the market. Someday books will be written about their genius.

BRILLIANT!
   13. Flynn Posted: November 28, 2006 at 03:00 AM (#2247028)
This is even better than the Devil Rays one.
   14. Long John McCaine Mutiny on the Bounty (scott) Posted: November 28, 2006 at 03:34 AM (#2247057)
i still like the robbie alomar one.
   15. Athletic Supporter leads the nation in drifters Posted: November 28, 2006 at 03:36 AM (#2247060)
I would imagine that the point of not offering arb is that if he's offered arb, it drives down his market value. This should be independent of when he is signed.

Also, someone should compile a "Best of Transaction Oracle," to preserve these gems in eternity. I think my favorite is still the Robbie Alomar toast one, but this is definitely top ten.

What Robbie Alomar one?

I can't wait to see what kind of <strike>ridiculous contrace</strike> money Zito gets. Matsuzaka hasn't signed, yet. Or Jason Schmidt. Jeff Weaver? I'm half aroused.

Geez; I oughta write a letter to Angelos telling him to sign more crappy players.

Dan always seems to take it so well.

Also, this and this are gold.
   22. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: November 28, 2006 at 04:05 AM (#2247097)
this deal is stupid, but I guess I'd rather have Angelos' money going to a mediocrity like Baez than remain in his pocket.

Ok, that's a lame rationalization...but it's all I got.

I can't wait to see the Transaction Oracle when Miguel Tejada is traded to the Angels for Maicer Izturis and Joe Saunders.

That "Drese" line in that Bowden picture tremendous.

Yeah, right. There's no way that deal is getting done without Chris Resop.
   26. Long John McCaine Mutiny on the Bounty (scott) Posted: November 28, 2006 at 05:24 AM (#2247142)
yeah, the drese/druse line cracked me up.

the jacque jones signing doesn't look entirely terrible now, though.

neither does joining the tigers.

Beautiful.
   28. bibigon Posted: November 28, 2006 at 04:11 PM (#2247429)
The Orioles just signed Scott Williamson too. Cheap, only $900K.
   29. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: November 28, 2006 at 04:15 PM (#2247430)
They're also rumored to have a deal in place with Bradford.
   30. birdlives is one crazy ninja Posted: November 28, 2006 at 06:24 PM (#2247559)
Re: Williamson and Bradford. Along with Baez, I'm happy to see that the bullpen has improved. Now if they can only find a 2 SPs, 1B, DH, LF, and pray that CF and 3B don't regress.

*cue movie voice guy*

In a world... where Wayne Krivsky will trade all of his available talent for relief pitching, the Orioles boldly stockpile mediocre ones so as to fleece the Reds come the trade deadline.
   32. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: November 28, 2006 at 06:34 PM (#2247569)
It would be nice if the upshot of these deals is that they're planning to trade Ray, Gibbons, and Penn for Teixiera, but there's about 0.0001% chance that that's true. Actually, if they made that trade, signed Bonds, and signed a guy like Lilly, they MIGHT be able to compete for the wildcard. But none of that will happen.
   33. TVerik, AKA Snoopy Snoopy Poop Dog Posted: November 28, 2006 at 06:40 PM (#2247573)
There may be a 0.0001% chance that they planned it this way, but it may work that way - if the O's are in fourth place near the deadline and the Reds are shooting distance from the Wild Card, all of this crapola in the offseason could possibly work out OK.

RDF. And probably not a bad move!
   35. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: November 28, 2006 at 06:49 PM (#2247589)
Well, as an O's fan, I certainly hope your right. In fact, the Reds just missed the playoffs this year with Dave Weathers as their closer. With an exciting young talent like Chris Ray, the Reds would have a great shot at the division! Krivsky should trade Bruce, Bailey and Votto for Ray and Baez! That'll get the Reds over the hump.

Vulto Petri Graeculi viso, planxit Sanctus Hubbins, sed cum corpus mortui Petri lapsum esset, laetus est. Petro mortuo sciebat Orioles volaturos esse.

(Sorry, Vulgate. Couldn't resist.)

When I saw "Williamson," my first thought was not of Scott but of Mark. I'm not so sure at this point that dragging Mark Williamson out of retirement would have been worse.
