A .489 OPS for Bako? I know Bako sucks, but that seems to be 100 points too low.

His OPS this season was .490.

But the year before was much better, although in limited action (and that's "limited action for Bako", not just "limited action for a normal backup catcher"). Anyway, he's in his mid-30s, and never been much. I think that .489 is probably a bit low, but not 100 points low.

At least Bako has a cool middle name.

GABOR!
   5. Gern Blanston Posted: November 29, 2006 at 06:55 PM (#2248506)
No, wait--"Gabor" is his first name. Gabor Paul II Bako. Quite the handle.

So which number will be greater....

The Bako comments on this thread -- or extra base hits by Bako in 2007?

With this comment, we've already surpassed what ZiPS projects.

A testament to those great Dusty Baker benches: Bako made the last out of the '03 Cubs season, in Game 7 of the LCS.

I think the Bako signing is a good one because it will force Sam Perlozzo to play Ramon Hernandez every day as he should.

Williamson was a low cost gamble. Bradford is a good signing if you ignore the fact that they've already signed Baez and Walker.

The comment I made when the Cubs were adding bullpen arms last winter applies here, I think, which is: A good bullpen on this team is like a nice rack on a warthog.

Does anyone here read Orioles Hangout? I skimmed some of the threads recently to see if any inside info. was posted, and ended up reading some of the stuff re the recent signings. I swear, some of those posters, including some of the people who run the site, must be functionally retarded.

10:
In one of the recent O's threads (such as they are) I asked David N. if he still had an O's blog, and mentioned that we need more good O's blogs than bad.

When I was thinking "bad," I was thinking Orioles Hangout.

I haven't really gotten into the O's fare at MVN (all-baseball has a pretty good nats blog), and Bird in the Belfry doesn't do it for me.

An Orioles' TO is about as good as it gets, actually. Yay, D-Syzzle.

I think every team has a fansite that's inhabited primarily by, well, fools. Unfortunately, those sites tend to be really popular, as there are a lot of fools out there.

Make that, D-Szyzzle.

The problem with Orioles Hangout is that it is (I guess) the *most* popular fansite. (Dare I use the word "flaghip?") In fact, they actually have subscription-only content, and the "site boss" (for lack of a better term) has a regular guest gig on the radio.

What a scam.

BTW, what's the time interval on posts before one is considered "Dialing" a TO? Is it possible to Dial a TO?

Good old Todd Which-hand-do-you-throw-with. What an amazing run he had in Baltimore. Thinking of him takes me back to my pre-jaded days of Oriole fandom.

Nothing is worse than the fan comments on the Sun webpage. Reading them is almost as depressing as being a fan of this team.

"Flaghip"...that's good. I'm going back to bed.

There are a few people who post comments on the Sun's Orioles blog who say intelligent things. Most of them don't though. But the blog itself is good.

Paying to post OH really irked me but I guess they have ever right to charge money if it suits them. It's definitely the most visited O's fansite. Overall, I like it, mostly because you can find a huge thread on any topic O's topic in a very short time. A lot of posters there are waaay to optimistic about the O's. They do NOT like the word firesale or least they didn't like it last summer when I used to visit there regularly. Let me put in a plug for camdenchat.com. Unfortunately, the site doesn't get a lot of traffic in comparison to OH but I hope that changes!

Except that when TM (you know who I mean) says that the Orioles now have the best bullpen in the AL, it's amazing how many of the more intelligent ones agree with him.

I'm not sure who you mean. If by "best" that person means "most unnecessarily expensive," then the Orioles have the best bullpen by far.

At the same time, I'm okay with their approach toward the bullpen. First, if the moves fail and they're out of it by June, they have some valuable trade chips. A lot of people have presented the argument that they should construct their bullpen on the cheap with guys from within the system, like teams such as the A's and Twins. Those people forget, though, that the O's player development record is awful, and so the bullpen guys they would be promoting from within would be awful. Exhibit A: The 2006 season.

I enjoy reading OH, if only because it:
A. Brings back fond memories of countering the exact same nonsense on asbbo and OH over the last ten years; nothing like being proven right over and over to boost that old ego.
B. Provides a laugh at the persistence of delusional thinking, as well as convincing evidence that there are plenty of fools around who are easy marks if eveer you need the cash.

The other Oriole sites offering better content than OH include Camden Chat and Oriole Magic.

I wonder what cap Paul Bako will wear on his Hall of Fame plaque. So many to choose from.
   24. Dan Szymborski Posted: December 03, 2006 at 05:19 PM (#2250730)
It always makes me wonder if I really am still a fan of this team. There's absolutely zero connection between this team and the Orioles I enjoyed watching except the laundry. 1988 was an awful season, but I cared a lot about that team than I did any of the teams of the last 10 years - the Orioles could go 45-117 and I don't think I'd have even the slightest pang of sadness. Hell, I'd probably be happy as the only thing that can turn this team around is to be godawful beyond belief.
   25. Dingbat Charlie Posted: December 03, 2006 at 06:18 PM (#2250759)
My O's fandom is buried deep, locked in a bunker where the damage done by Angelos can't hurt it. I don't really root for or against them while watching games. I'm no longer outraged by FO moves, I just accept them with bland resignation. I only hope I outlive the Angelos regime so I may see them thrive again, at which time I'm confident that my emotional attachment to the team will return.

Among all of the evil people in this ugly world, Peter is the only human I've ever openly wished death upon, and it can't come soon enough.

ok, now that I see that on the blog, I wish I hadn't added that final sentence, and don't really mean it.

besides, his sons will inherit the team and probably be even worse. I'd rather he just sell the team.
   27. Gern Blanston Posted: December 04, 2006 at 01:57 PM (#2251210)
Oriole fans are the AL brethren of Cub fans (at least, in recent years), except you've probably got it even worse (the Cubs managed to achieve their "awful to the point of prompting at least a partial housecleaning" last year, and there are even rumblings that the team may be on the block, and of course the Cubs don't share a division with the Yankees and Red Sox). My condolences; I have no reason to wish ill upon the O's.

Why not? Unless he's REALLY evil, death will visit him as it visits everyone. You want him to be the *exception*? :)

24:

Good question, D-Szyzzle. Maybe it's the Hangouters that are actually the true Oriole fans, now?

The rest of us are merely scarred observers? I am also half-rooting for an apocalyptically horrible 2007 Orioles season, just to see what may happen in the wake of 10 straight losing seasons. A seismic shakeup or more of the same?

It's almost as if another ~75-win season, or even an 82-85 win season, would be worse than an awful 60-win smoking crater. A modest winning season means the FO might think they are on the right track.
   30. Dingbat Charlie Posted: December 06, 2006 at 03:36 PM (#2252795)
Why not?

Perhaps, like Gollum (the physical resemblance is there), he has some unexpected and unwitting act of good in him.

Peter Schmuck takes some swipes at evil Pete in today's Sun.
