Reds - Signed Taveras

Cincinnati Reds - Signed SS Frank Taveras to a 2-year contract.

With Alex Gonzalez coming off a pretty serious injury and Jeff Keppinger not hitting at all after coming back from his (and not being a SS defensively), the Reds are simply adding some shortstop depth here. Taveras has little power, but he's quick and can leg out an occasional double and handle the defensive skills of the position. The 26-year layoff is a concern, but Taveras was always in good shape and it should be like riding a bike.

Wait, the Reds signed Willy Taveras? Well now, that's a significantly worse idea. Taveras is so bad at hitting a ball that the only thing he manages to break is the conservation of linear momentum law.

That Jennings for whatnot trade sure as hell didn't work out for Houston.
It's not turning out to be such a great steal for the Rockies either.
Even if Buchholz is looking solid right now...

Is it over for Jason Hirsch?

Wasn't Taveras supposed to be a great defensive outfielder? His UZR the past few years looks horrible.

I think he's one of those guys who is assumed to be good because he's fast, but he gets terrible reads (See: Alex Sanchez)

Also apparently he's going to be their full-time lead-off hitter. Wow is that a double-plus ungood idea.

Willy Taveras has a higher career OPS+ than Frank Tavarez (72 to 71). Both are OBP heavy and both players stole plenty of bases.

I fondly remember the days when Walt Jocketty was a good GM.

Doesn't Taveras have a cannon throwing arm?

Does Taveras even project better than Corey Patterson?

He gets 6.25 over 2 years???? How does this happen when last year he only made 1.975 and then was non tendered?

Maybe Omar Moreno will decide to sign him for the Angels.

Just to confirm, that's the fast Brian Hunter on the comp list?

Just to confirm, that's the fast Brian Hunter on the comp list?

Well, if ZiPS came up with the other Brian Hunter as similar, I think I'd have to scrap the whole thing and start over.
