Royals - Released Tomko

Kansas City Royals - Released P Bret Tomko

Tomko's stint with the Royals this year has been less than thrilling, the highlight of his season being the day he got his ERA under 5 by throwing 7 shutout innings against the Angels (that lasted all of 1 more game as he got pasted by the juggernaut Orioles offense). While one would think Tomko would have trouble getting another job considering the number of teams he's disappointed in the last decade, if Mark Redman can get another shot after 2007, Tomko should be able to. He's probably not as bad as he's pitched this season and could be a useful mopup guy/back-of-rotation fill-in if he's cheap, but to be honest, that describes a lot of guys at AAA. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tomko pitching for Richmond in the next few weeks.

No impact to the Royals as they came to "terms" with not having Tomko a while back.

And yet I will never forget ... until probably tomorrow when it will no longer amuse me so ... opening day when, with a 4-3 lead after 6, Hillman thought it wise to turn that lead over to Tomko for a 2-inning relief stint. It turned out to be one of his better outings as he only gave up the tying run and the Royals went on to win.

But I'll still put the challenge of finding a dumber managerial move than that one. Opening day. An entire bullpen at your disposal. One run lead. Brett Tomko. For two innings.

Well, OK, there was the Royals' decision to sign Hideo Nomo, give him 4.3 IP over 3 games so he could give up 9 runs on 3 HR.

This is still the king of all Royals dumb moves.

Royals one game out of first, Appier basically ran out of steam after two innings. Tony Pena turns to GRAEME LLOYD for long relief. Lloyd performed as expected and the Royals lost by 7 runs.

Also, letting Gobble pitch against Konerko earlier this month was a dumb move.

The Yankees should be all over this guy. Seriously, for a spot start, give me Tomko over Ponson any day of the week.

On Sept. 21, 2004, Tomko beat Houston and improve his record to 11-6. At that point in his career, he had 73 wins against 57 loss.
Since then, he's gone 22-42.
BB-Ref shows he's made about $18MM-plus in MLB contracts AND he has a former Playboy Plamate as a wife. Bah to him.

I once got 4 tickets from KNBR, the station which broadcasts the Giant games. We were in the second row behind home in a game against the Reds when Tomko was with the Reds. As he was walking in from the field after a poor inning for some reason I yelled "Get used to losing Tomko, your a Red". I had not been heckling, and no one else had been either prior to that. He went nuts and after shouting at me cupped his hand and made a quick up and down motion in an obscene gesture. At Candlestick behind home plate there used to be a group of old women who went to all of the games and one of them came down and told me that in over 30 years she had never seen anything like that.

I think players should be allowed one on-field anti-heckler snap per season.

In all seriousness, though, two wins down, 13 to go. If Tomko's going to meet the projection of 15 wins set by Posnanski's scouting friend, he'll be a heck of a stretch drive pickup for someone.

So, where's the podcast?

So, where's the podcast?

Still on the fence on whether it's something worth doing.
