Royals - Released Tomko
Kansas City Royals - Released P Bret Tomko
Tomko's stint with the Royals this year has been less than thrilling, the highlight of his season being the day he got his ERA under 5 by throwing 7 shutout innings against the Angels (that lasted all of 1 more game as he got pasted by the juggernaut Orioles offense). While one would think Tomko would have trouble getting another job considering the number of teams he's disappointed in the last decade, if Mark Redman can get another shot after 2007, Tomko should be able to. He's probably not as bad as he's pitched this season and could be a useful mopup guy/back-of-rotation fill-in if he's cheap, but to be honest, that describes a lot of guys at AAA. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tomko pitching for Richmond in the next few weeks.
No impact to the Royals as they came to "terms" with not having Tomko a while back.

But I'll still put the challenge of finding a dumber managerial move than that one. Opening day. An entire bullpen at your disposal. One run lead. Brett Tomko. For two innings.
Well, OK, there was the Royals' decision to sign Hideo Nomo, give him 4.3 IP over 3 games so he could give up 9 runs on 3 HR.
Royals one game out of first, Appier basically ran out of steam after two innings. Tony Pena turns to GRAEME LLOYD for long relief. Lloyd performed as expected and the Royals lost by 7 runs.
Also, letting Gobble pitch against Konerko earlier this month was a dumb move.
Since then, he's gone 22-42.
BB-Ref shows he's made about $18MM-plus in MLB contracts AND he has a former Playboy Plamate as a wife. Bah to him.
Still on the fence on whether it's something worth doing.
