Sheffield hasn't put up a sub-.840 OPS in a full season since 1993.

I think I'd take the over on those ZiPS.

He's never been 38 before, and never played a full season in The Big Park That Should Really Be Called Tiger Stadium.

If you want to bet $100 that Sheff exceeds both ZIPS targets (433 AB and 836 OPS) I'll be happy to take the other side of it.

Florida, LA, he's played a lot in some pitcher's parks.

I think he goes over 840 OPS, but I think he's going to have an injury-riddled season. Less than 350 ABs in my crystal ball.

Yeah, I wouldn't knock him down on that account. Injuries, age, sure, but not park.

Good thing Gillick and DD didn't connect. Is it just me or does Burrell for Sanchez + 2 young relievers make too much sense for both sides?

Clever of Cashman to step in and snatch the youngsters. Would have hated to see promising young pitchers in Phillie uniforms.

I'm torn on the extension. On the one hand, I don't want Sheffield through age 41 so much. On the other, I don't want to trade six years of my prospect for 1 year of Sheff.

And boy, I couldn't have been more wrong about the value of Sheff's contract. I thought it would have been really foolish of the Yanks to pick up that option and try to trade him. I thought they'd get dimes on the dollar. I think I really underestimated how crazy this market is compared to previous ones. In this market, I wonder what Manny will bring back? He's younger and generally healthier than Sheffield, a little better as a hitter, on a shorter deal, but costs more. They both are considered to have baggage. I wonder if Boston could have had this same deal and if they would have taken it.

As much risk as the Tigers are taking on doing this, they never could have landed Manny for this package.

Manny would have to bring back ML ready talents.

a little better as a hitter

A little bit? HA! In the last 7 years, Manny has been better 5 times. In those 7 years, Over that time period including the years Sheffield was better Manny has produced 25% more RCAA. They aren't remotly similar hitter.

"a little better as a hitter"

As MHS already said, Manny is a much, much better hitter. I bet the perception is that Manny is much worse on D, but I don't think they're that far apart.
