White Sox - Acquired Teahen, Signed Kotsay
Chicago White Sox - Acquired 3B-OF Mark Teahen from the Kansas City Royals for 3B-OF Josh Fields and 2B Chris Getz; Signed OF Mark Kotsay to a 1-year, $1.5 million contract.A pretty bad and pretty pointless trade for the White Sox. Luckily for White Sox fans, when it comes to Kenny Williams, the trades I love turn out badly and the trades I hate turn out well, so Teahen will hit 40 home runs, Kotsay will win a Gold Glove, Josh Fields will contract lupus, and Getz will go on a shooting spree on the 2 train when the Royals visit New York.
Josh Fields has been pretty poor defensively, but Teahen's not a good defensive player either and isn't really a good hitter. If Teahen ends up replacing Dye, the White Sox have a problem in right field. If Teahen plays 3rd and Beckham shifts to 2nd, the White Sox have a problem at 2nd. Why trade Chris Getz, a serviceable, cheap, unspectacular player, along with Fields to not solve any problems? When you take into consideration that Teahen's likely going to cost north of $4 million in 2010, it just seems puzzling. The White Sox are far more than this away from being a solid team and the offseason's not even 24 hours old, so why the rush to send away Getz, Fields, and a few million bucks?
Kotsay played quite a bit of 1st for the Sox and hit well for a backup (292/349/434 in 40 games with the White Sox). Problem is that he's unlikely to hit anywhere near that again and his defense in center is just about gone, so he doesn't do much for the team. At least it's only $1.5 million. If the White Sox are truly concerned about finances, I'd strongly recommend not dropping $5.5 million by the first week of November without improving the team.
For the Royals, the upside is obvious. The team gets a couple of players that aren't stars but certainly better than Willie Bloomquist, and they save a few million bucks, given that I don't think they had the guts to non-tender Teahen. Good move for a franchise that hasn't had many recently.

That 96 OPS+ woulda been big stuff in LF at CitiField...
Yeah, the whole Farnsworth/Horacio Ramirez/Bloomquist/Jacobs/Betancourt season was an impressive run of crappy GM-ing. Torched something north of $25M plus shipped out a handful of decent young arms for absolutely no return at all. And, save Jacobs, it was all blatantly obvious stupidity before the fact.

Well, Teahen's a better player than Chris Getz is, and unlike Getz, he's not continually getting hurt.
It all depends on what the White Sox plan to do with Teahen. If Teahen is supposed to be a corner outfielder or third baseman and play every day, then no, he's not the answer to any question. He's a fine player to have coming off the bench, though.
As for Kotsay... meh. His salary isn't going to kill the team. I have a feeling that the White Sox aren't going to be that team that doesn't do what they need to do to compete because they're trying to shave a few hundred thousand off the budget.
One thing the White Sox are desperately missing is internal options at the corner positions. They pretty much need to get like Kotsay and Teahen because they don't have young players that are even close to major-league ready. This is turning around since the ignonimous end of the Dave Wilder era, but in the meantime...
I thought the Jacobs move was pretty obviously a horrible move too. It was panned by pretty much everyone at the time.
Last I heard, he played a few games in the AFL and left with some injury (forget what). He's still at least 2-3 years away from the majors, if he makes it at all. 2009 wasn't a great year for him.
Why would he be on the 2? That transfer to the 4 at 149th is a drag.
The details haven't officially been made public yet, rumor is that the Royals sent $2 million along with Teahen.
So they don't save any damn money. Now it makes no sense. Which is a relief, actually, as I don't want to think well of anything Dayton Moore does.
Bernie didn't go on a shooting spree. Besides, I was 5 years old when that happened, so I don't remember what train line it was.
My father actually attended the same school as Bernie for a year when the Goetz kids were sent away during Papa Goetz's pedophilia ordeal. Young Bernie was a weird dude even then.
He shot four people. How many do you have to shoot before it's considered a "spree"?
I'd say: 1
1-3 - incident
4-8 - spree
9-16 - frenzy
17+ - massacre
Spree indicates to me that he moved around and acquired targets. These fellows more or less presented themselves to Bernie. The weapon only held five rounds. I think you need to get up to double digits to qualify as a spree.
It's possible I'm influenced by the designation of Andrew Cunanan and his ilk as "spree killers."

I wrote a jokey post, too, before I realized what I was doing. If any of you guys are around Ft. Hood or connected to it...I don't even know what to say. It's just awful.
Nice catch, Dewey. So the offense is set, with the exception of LF (I'm assuming Quentin goes to RF) and 1B (or DH if Konerko stays at 1B). And I'm glad Pods isn't likely to return to LF -- as good as he was last year, I think it's pushing your luck to expect a repeat.

The free agent market doesn't hold much in the way of interesting OF's, and Williams doesn't seem to like free agency anyway, so I assume a trade (involving Jenks) may be forthcoming. I doubt we'll see Figgins on the south side -- there may be interest, but not enough money.
And if De Aza's on the roster, that's a bad thing. The White Sox need to get at least one, preferably two, bats. I would really like it if Teahen was NOT in the lineup every day.
I suspect Kenny Williams feels the same way. It's a question of whether he'll be able to afford something better.
Any chance Jordan Danks is ready this year with Rios sliding to RF (Danks is a CF, right?)? Also, it'd be a shame, but I have a bad feeling that Carlos Quentin's future is at DH (my wife has Plantar Fascitis and it's a chronic condition that has a nasty tendency to have frequent recurrences that take annoyingly long to heal from; running around in the outfield isn't the best way to try to avoid these).
Danks is impressive so far in the AFL, but he had a mediocre year at AA. I don't think the Sox will or should count on him to be ready for Opening Day, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him enter the picture at some point during 2010.
I haven't seen Danks play, but what I've read about him suggests that, while Danks can handle center field for now, he's probably destined for a corner spot. Rios really should be left in center, anyway.
EDIT: And yes, I think Carlos Quentin will be a full-time DH, and sooner rather than later.
Kind of how, despite his tools, Rios has been mostly a RF (obviously Wells had a lot to do with that though)

Hes perfectly fine as the 25th man. Hes a natural fly-catcher, a good baserunner and he does a decent job slapping and getting on base. Good bunter too from what I remember.
Ideally, I'd like to see a bench of Kotsay-Teahen-Nix-(Fungible Backup Catcher), and the Sox work to acquire better players to cover their holes on the corners.
Kudos for Kenny also for loving his position flex....he's avoid being trapped into having to get an OF or a 3B or a whatever: he can get the best player he can, regardless of position, and still sort it out. Very well done.
For a team that was under .500 last season, this doesn't look too bad, especially if Rios and Quentin bounce back. I don't know much about Beckham but in looking at his stats and age, he seems to have some significant upside, especially if he plays at second base.
