On the other hand, looking at his stats (7 HR, 19 BB, 33 SO in 50 IP), how did he end up with a 2.90 ERA this year anyway?

I'm surprised that there's so little love for Corey Patterson - ok, so the projection calls for his BA/OBP/SLG to remain essentially unchanged ... but why would his SB/game rate go down so significantly from the past 2 years?
I think Corey is on the Marquis Grissom career path, only he decided to go down the sacrifice-all-aspects-of-your-game-for-a-few-more-home-runs road a few years earlier in his career than Grissom did.
So why does ZIPS project a dip in HRs also?
BTW, Corey's actually been making some real progress at taking more pitches. 45 walks this year may not seem like a lot, but it was his career high and reflects a multi-year trend of improvement.
Also, Giles seems to have a smaller upside because of his size. I'd think he'd plateau quicker than peak, especially if he's filled out his small body already.
And does it use GB/FB as an projection tool for HR allowed?
ZiPS doesn't directly use GB/FB data - it assumes that pitchers will stick to their general trends. Which generally works - even pitchers that change over the course of their careers generally don't do it suddenly. Besides, I have *zero* data on how GB/FB ages and I haven't seen anything on the subject.
Rusch I just forgot. Skipped right over him looking at the 40-man.
And I absolutely refuse to believe the Percival projection. Of course, he won't be an Angel next season, but still, I reject that projection completely.
If you look at his career stats, the biggest fluke is his 2001/2002 seasons (where he stunk), not his amazing 2003 season.
ZIPS has him projected at slightly above his career average. I believe it.

Cyr's K/BB ratio looks about right to me. I accidentally transposed him in DMB - made him bat lefty throw righty.
The batters are ranked by RC/27.

And for those that haven't figured it out, the yearly ZiPS projections can be reprinted in part or whole or used for any non-commercial endeavor.
Kim had his stuff back by the end of the year, fwiw. Why he wasn't included in the postseason is cause for speculation, though. Apparently the genesis of his "injury" was "doing his own thing" over the offseason -- perhaps possible when you're a 21 year-old phenom, but not so much after you turn 25... He overthrew and injured himself in S.T. but really he spent most of the year undoing the "damage" from the offseason.
As for Pedro, his peripheral numbers this year look a lot like his peripheral numbers in '98. He's had a resurgence of "stuff" this season and he's had trouble controling it. I wouldn't be surprised if he put up a couple 180-200 ERA+'s in the next 3 years. The guy has obvious pitchability, and he's back close to full strength. It may come down to a choice between innings and quality with him, though, so he'd have a real premium value to a team with a strong bullpen.
BTW, can we get projections for Jon Papelbon and Jon Lester (High-A BOS pitchers this year)? I think they'll both see at least a dozen or so innings with BOS next year, possibly more if next year is a rebuilding year or if either is traded traded.
The pitching stats look very good, BTW. I have a hard time arguing with any of them too hard.
