Before anyone says, “Remember… Kim Ng is not a “21st Century Baseball Man.” The name of the article is a take on prog rockers, King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man”

To follow up on this article…

Buzzie Bavasi was not plucked out of thin air for this article. The man who was involved with Jackie Robinson, recommended Walter Alston to Walter O’Malley, the man that had to deal with negotiations with Nolan Ryan, and much more, will be the topic of my next interview for http://www.businessofbaseball.com.

Those that wish to read prior interviews, including the most recent with former commissioner, Bowie Kuhn, pint your browser here:

While all teams value statistical analysis to some degree, that value has to be weighed against any perceived cost of adding another person to the baseball operations mix.

At this point I’m pretty sure that every team has added a stat analyst position.  So some may be debating the utility of adding a second such position, but the decision has already been made on the first.

The distinction between teams, near as I can tell, is that some employ folks who know something about statistics and modeling and some (seem to) employ folks who think pitcher-batter splits are highly meaningful.

I don’t know if this guy specialized in econometrics, but a PhD in econ from Berkeley ought to be able to run circles around guys like MGL (or even me! :-) when it comes to sophisticated modeling.  Whether there’s much benefit to be had in more sophisticated modeling is an open question.

Hopefully the follow-up article won’t be titled “Epitaph”.

Hopefully the follow-up article won’t be titled “Epitaph”.

If I kept it with the Athletics, possibly Elephant Talk could be the title.

[FWIW] “21st Century Schizoid Man” was covered on April Wine’s “Harder… Faster…” album which also included “I Like To Rock” [/FWIW]
