2008 - SABR Convention in Cleveland

For those of you who were unable/unwilling to join us in South Alaska this year 2008 has been announced as a Cleveland event after 2007 in far west, also known as St Louis.

You’re all missing an awful good time.

Hey Sam M.  How about that NL…

We're having an awfully good time here, too. It's like the old days in 2002.

Cleveland's good. My family's not that far away in Kalamazoo that I could combine the trip to SABR with a visit. Just hold it later in the summer so my youngsters can come.

After all of Mr. High Standards passionate arguments, I can't believe SABR decided to take the convention out west for another year.

No Dial. No Vinay. Two guys named Jaffe though.

Jay went, too?

I eagerly await the recaps. I saw one on the front page when I glanced there this morning.

It was a blast. I'm going to sleep for about a week as I averaged 4 hours of sleep a night. Met a whole lot of great people including the BTF and THT guys. Jay Jaffe and I hung for quite a bit in the bar.

Wireless internet had many gathering in the lobby and bar. Once the latter was open, I wound up hanging there.

I spent a good deal of time interviewing folks for SABR and my blog. Interviewed Neyer, Alex Cartwright (great, great grandson of THAT Alexander Cartwright), John Thorn *who, by the way won the Bob Davids award), Mark Lamster (author of The Spalding World Tour book), Bill Nowlin (more Red Sox books than you can shake a stick at), and John Zajc (executive director of SABR).

Had dinner with Andy Zimbalist and my fellow co-chairs, Gary Gillette and John Ruoff. Andy was quite pleasant and conversation for a BoB guy like me was great.

Weather was fantastic the entire trip.

Presentations and panels were very good... Met Bouton and Jim Pagliaroni Sunday morning, which was a real treat.

Much more than this space allows... Oh, and apparently peanuts, while very expensive at Safeco were willingly thrown in my direction by some BTFers in attendance :)

By the way... South Alaska was better than anything the East Coast could offer in terms of atmosphere. One presenter from the East Coast couldn't make it due to having their house flood. One Board member from the Boston area was to have arrived on 4pm on Tues., only to arrive on 11:30am on Weds.

Most people walked to Safeco. Most of us got tans that sat in the field level boxes. All mentioned how beautiful it was. Many, many, many of them said they'd be vacationing in Seattle and the Pac NW in the future.

It would take too long to explain fully. The short form - if you were 22 and could choose to live in Detroit with your brother or London with your mother, which would you pick?

Cleveland - within 9 hrs of my house! I'll make my first convention in 08!!

I don't think I'd want to live in Detroit even if it were with Jessica Alba.

Hated missing the convention this year. I'll totally be there in St. Louis, though. And to compensate, I'll make sure to be twice as drunk.
